Box Score Albion, MI – Alma Men's Soccer took to the road to face off with Albion College to open MIAA conference play. The Scots were victorious by a score of 1-0.
The pitch certainly looked tilted throughout the match, with Alma spending large amounts of time in their own end under pressure from the hosts. However, it was the Scots who would get on the board first. The visitors were moving in on the counter when an Alma player was taken down just outside the 18 yard box. Jack Lockerbie stepped up and hit a perfect free kick from about 19 yards out, sending it into the top right corner to give Alma the lead.
Lockerbie's goal was the only mark of the contest. However, things were far from over. The Alma defense was under constant duress in the second half and, despite a few chances, could not put away an insurance marker. In the last 10 minutes Albion made an enormous push, but the Scots held strong and secured the win.
Lockerbie scored his team leading 2nd goal of the season in the win. Chris Henry earned a shutout, stopping all 8 Briton shots that were on target.
Head Coach John Greer was pleased with his squad, "The guys showed real determination tonight in the way they won their battles in kep moments. We played with energy and fought in a way that should make Scots everywhere proud. We have a couple of days to regroup and get ready for another tough opponent."
Alma will be back in action on Saturday as they host Adrian in MIAA play.
