Box Score ALMA, Mich. - The Scots played host to Oberlin College on Saturday afternoon. Alma came out fast and took an early lead in the 3rd minute when Junior Joe Rawlin finished a cross from Freshman Ethan Swartzentruber. Rawlin almost doubled the advantage a minute later when he beat the Oberlin goalkeeper but was kept out by the post. The Scots did not have to wait long to increase their advantage as a good passing movement ended with Junior Keegan Hobson laying off the ball for Senior Sandro Suffredini who hit a vicious strike past the goalkeeper.
The Scots held their 2 goal lead for most of the game until Sophomore Ethan Vollstedt played a great pass that put Freshman Matthew Przepiora on a breakaway. Przepiora calmly finished to give Alma a 3-0 lead in the 79th minute.
The Alma defense continued to hold strong as they repelled Oberlin's attacks. Oberlin found their breakthrough in the 89th minute as Jesper Soelvberg was able to finish past the Alma Goalkeeper, Junior Chris Henry. Henry registered 4 saves on 5 shots on goal.
The Oberlin goal did not deter the Alma attack as Swartzentruber drove down the left side, cut back, and found Junior Isaac Jackson in the box. Swartzentruber's second assist and Jackson's goal put an exclamation point on a good team performance. The final score of Saturday's game was 4-1.
Coach Greer had these thoughts on the game:
We started the game fast. There was a good intensity, focus, and togetherness in the performance. There is still another level for us to reach, but this performance was something to build on.
The men's soccer team will travel to Elmhurst College (IL) on Wednesday, September 22 for their next game.
