Kalamazoo, Mich. - The Alma College softball team swept the Kalamazoo College Hornets on Wednesday in a MIAA doubleheader. The Scots improve their record to 16-10 and 6-4 in conference play.
The first inning for the Scots started off strong with a single from Hannah Falejczyk, bringing in the first run of the game and making it 1-0. The Hornets answered back with four runs in the bottom of the first, but that was the last time they would score, bringing the game to 4-1. All runs were unearned.
In the top of the second, Danielle Dumoulin came up swinging and hit her first home run of the season to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Then at the top of the third, Haley Ullrich smashed a triple and tied the game 4-4. On the mound, Ullrich kept the Hornets from scoring as they game went into extra innings.
In the top of the ninth, Ullrich was back at it with a double to put the Scots in front, 6-4. Later, Dumoulin came back up to the plate with a three-run home run to solidify the Scots lead, 9-4.
Ullrich finished out her nine-inning complete game to earn the win. Overall, the junior gave up only one earned run while tallying six strikeouts
The second game for the Scots started off with a single in the bottom of the first from Brooke Wells. Then, Hadyn Terwilliger doubled and brought in Wells to make the score 1-0.
Kalamazoo would take the lead and make it 5-1 in the fifth. The Scots answered back in the bottom of the inning with another triple from Ullrich to make it a three-run game. Wells came back up with a double at the plate that scored Ullrich to make it 5-3. Terwilliger then drove in Wells with a double to make it a one-run game.
The bottom of the sixth inning for the Scots started off with Megan Krueger's first hit of the season; a single up the middle. Jessica Eva moved Krueger around the bases and a wild pitch from the Hornets allowed Kruger to tie up the game at 5-all. Ullrich continued her great day at the plate with a double that brought in two runs to put Alma in front, 7-5. Ullrich would get the final three outs to earn the save and seal the victory for the Scots.
Krueger earned the win in the second game for Alma by pitching 1.1 scoreless innings.
Scots will be home on Friday, April 16th for a Tripleheader against Albion and Olivet. First game starts at 12 pm with the Scots against Olivet.
