ALMA, MICH. – The Alma College softball team hosted Calvin University for a doubleheader. Alma took the doubleheader winning 2-0 in the first game and battling 8 innings in the second to win 10-8.
Calvin (8-4, 1-3 MIAA) held Alma from scoring for more than half the game. In the bottom of the fifth, Aynslee Koutz reached first base from getting hit by a pitch and Haley Ullrich hit one over the fence. She earned the only RBIs of the game.
On the mound, Elk River native Ullrich pitched all seven innings, only allowing four hits, striking out 8 batters with no errors.
In the second game, Alma (13-5, 4-0 MIAA) struggled to hold Calvin down allowing them to earn three runs in the first inning and four in the second inning. The Scots scored their first runs in the 4th inning thanks to a double from Chloe Deckrow that advanced junior Ullrich and Emma Fraser home. In the top of 6th inning, the Scots scored 6 runs beginning with Taylor Griffith singling and bringing in Koutz for a run. The 6-run effort ended with Emma Fraser doubling to send Hannah Cambe and Hannah Solomon in for two.
The game was forced into extra innings, due to an 8-8 tie in the bottom of the 7th. In the top of the 8th, Hadyn Terwilliger doubled bringing Hannah Fleming in for a run. Then Fraser hit a fly ball out to right field so Taylor Griffith could score a run.
On the mound, Daniella Little pitched 1.1 innings and struck-out one. Lakin Fryzel then took over for her pitching 4.1 innings and struck out three batters. Junior Ullrich pitched the last 2 innings, allowed 0 hits and struck out one.
Alma will play Saint Mary's College (IN) in a doubleheader on Saturday April 3rd at Saint Mary's College. The first game will begin at 2pm with the second one shortly after it's conclusion.
