Scots Sweep Yellow Jackets in Home Opener

ALMA, Mich. - The Alma College softball team defeated Defiance College in both games of their doubleheader. The score of the first game was 6-0 and the second one was 5-4.  The Scots are now 7-3 and Defiance is 2-7-1.

In their first home game, the Scots made sure to put on quite the show. In the third Inning Hannah Solomon stole second base and her teammate Taylor Griffith stole home in the same play off of a wild pitch. Aynslee Koutz started off the scoring in the fourth inning with a huge triple that brought in Hannah Fleming for a run and then stole home herself off a wild pitch. In the fifth inning, Hannah Falejczyk singled to right field and brought Jessica Eva in for a run. In the last inning, Emma Fraser brought in Chloe Deckrow and Aynslee Koutz in for runs.

On the mound, Haley Ullrich pitched a seven-inning shutout, only allowing three hits and zero errors. She struck-out 12 batters,

Solomon, Eva, Koutz and Griffith stole bases for the Scots.

Koutz had the only triple of the game.

In the second game, the Scots started off early with their scoring. In the second inning, Koutz hit a home run that also scored Morgan Dubay. In the third inning, Defiance made a comeback with a two-run home run, bringing the score to 2-2. The first time the Yellow Jackets had tied with Alma, but it would not be the last.

In the fifth inning, Emma Fraser singled and brought in Taylor Griffith for a run. Hadyn Terwilliger helped to increase the lead by earning a single that scored Teah Lint. Defiance once again brought the game to a tie in the top of the seventh but in the bottom of the inning pinch hitter Jessica Eva singled and brought in Griffith for the walk off run to win the game.

Daniella Little was the starting pitcher, pitching 3.2 innings and earning one strikeout. Ullrich pitched the other 3.1 innings and earned her fifth win of the season.

The Scots will play again on March 23rd at 3:00pm as they face off with Olivet College in their first conference games. Their next home game is Friday March 26th when they face off with Calvin University and Saint Mary's College.
