Alma, Mich. - The Alma College men's soccer team played a gritty game through the rain and a sloppy field to earn a 3-1 win over Mount St. Joseph University (OH) on Sunday (Sept. 29) afternoon.

Alma was dominant to start and scored within the first two minutes when senior Noah Canlas (Naperville, Ill. Naperville Central) set up senior Hebren Hein (Jackson Mich. / Jackson) for the first goal of the game. After the initial goal, the weather slowed both teams down.

Again, Alma was aggressive to begin the second half. Senior Kyle Farmer (Greenville Mich. / Greenville) scored in the 47th minute when a shot from Canlas was deflected by MSJ goalkeeper Nathaniel Chambers; Farmer was ready and tipped the ball into the goal. Later, Farmer returned the favor and set up a breakaway goal for Canlas, who dribbled past Chambers and dropped in the Scots' last goal in the 53rd minute.

The Lions were only able to score once – in the 68th minute when sophomore Connor McCain (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Central) fouled Justin Ives in the box. McCain was given a yellow card and Ives was rewarded with a penalty kick, which he converted.

McCain was not the only one on the field that received a yellow card on the day. Senior Brian Ganton (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston) received one, as well as MSJ's Cameron Middendorf in the 49th minute and Joshua Bailey in the 55th minute.

The Scots will return to play on Wednesday (Oct. 2) at 7:00 p.m. for a match at Hope College.
