Clermont, Fla. - The Alma College softball team split a pair of games on Monday (Feb. 25), falling 6-4 to Hanover before earning its first win of the season against Capital, 16-3 in five innings.

The Scots (1-3) broke open in the fourth inning, scoring 14 runs on 11 hits against Capital. Skylar Crisenbery (Watervliet, Mich. / Coloma) was the pitcher of record in both games; she earned the win against Capital after allowing three runs on just four hits over five innings. Earlier against Hanover, she gave up two runs with the score tied in the bottom of the sixth. The Scots left eight runners on base against the Panthers, including leading the bases loaded in the fourth inning.

How It Happened

Game 1 - Hanover 6, Alma 4
  • The Scots scored all their runs first, and Hanover responded with the next six. Kaylee Martin (North Branch, Mich. / North Branch) drew a walk to begin the second inning and Riley Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich. / Sacred Heart Academy) doubled her home to begin the scoring.
  • In the third, both Tucker and Schweiger singled to lead off, and MacKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich. / Edwardsburg) brought them both home with a single, herself. Kennedy Koenigsknecht (Fowler, Mich. / Fowler) who pinch ran for Creed, came around to score on a bunt single from Madyson Piche (Sault Sainte Marie, Mich. / Sault Area).
  • Hanover got all three runs back in the bottom half of the third. With the bases loaded, Carlie Roark hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Ashley Swearingen. Later, Lily Beurman singled two more runners home.
  • In the fourth, Alma loaded the bases after a pair of errors and a bunt single, but couldn't score. Koenigsknecht reached on a fielder's choice, getting Kendall Bird (Holt, Mich. / Holt) out at home and Martin struck out to end the inning.
  • The Panthers tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on two singles and a sacrifice bunt. They added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, breaking a 4-4 tie.
  • In the seventh, Piche drew a walk, but Hadyn Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich. / Sacred Heart Academy) would line into a double play to end the game.
Game 2 - Capital 3, Alma 16 (5 innings)
  • The Scots opened the game against Capital with three singles and a walk, scoring Tucker. They added another run in the second when Schweiger singled home Piche.
  • The Crusaders came back with three runs in the third. After earning one run from hit-by-pitch, Erica Ogden singled, picking up two RBI, but Veronica Zack was thrown out at home to end the inning.
  • The Scots went off in the fourth inning, nearly batting around twice. Alma amassed 14 runs on 11 hits and two walks, working through three different pitchers. Out of Alma's 11 hits, five went for extra bases. Capital's Kim Rega replaced Isabelle Hysong after six batters; she allowed seven runs on five hits and failed to get an out over seven batters. She also threw two wild pitches.
  • Piche opened the fourth with a walk and Becca Spenner (Berrien Center, Mich. / Lakeshore) doubled her home. Morgan Dubay (Merrill, Mich. / Merrill) pinch ran for Spenner and scored on a triple from Tucker. Creed then singled both her and Schweiger home. Later, Hannah Cambe (Demotte, Ind. / Kankakee Valley) would double home Spenner and Piche. Creed picked up her second hit of the inning with a double to score Schweiger, and Teah Lint (Saint Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) hit a double in her first career at-bat to score Koenigsknecht.
  • The Crusaders went down 1-2-3 in the fifth to end the game.
