Box Score 1 Alma, Mich. - The Alma College softball team swept Albion College on Friday (April 27), 13-5 in six innings and 16-2 in five innings.
Alma (23-12 overall, 9-7 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) had its biggest offensive day of the season. It hit .531 and slugged .797 as a team.
Mary Brooks (Portland, Mich. / Portland) hit her ninth home run of the season in game one. Bry Chapman (Holt, Mich. / Holt) also launched her second career home run, a grand slam to end game one. The Scots had seven extra-base hits in the first game. Cassidy Tucker (Coleman, Mich. / Coleman) went yard in game two.
What Happened
Game 1 - at Alma 13, Albion 5
- Brooks started the scoring in the first inning with a three-run shot to deep center field. Later, Kaylee Martin (North Branch, Mich. / North Branch) doubled to left-center field and scored on a double by Riley Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich. / Sacred Heart Academy) to put the Scots up 4-0.
- Alma added two more runs in the second. Chapman hit a double to left center field off the top of the wall to lead off the inning. Tucker reached on a bunt single and Chelsea Schweiger (St. Clair, Mich. / St. Clair) doubled them both home.
- Chapman singled home Terwilliger in the third to give Alma a 7-0 lead.
- Albion got on the board in the fourth on an infield single that plated Lauren Beougher.
- The Britons added another run in the fifth when Beougher singled home Camille Roloff.
- Alma got both those runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Tucker hit a sacrifice fly to plate Terwilliger and Schweiger singled to center field to plate Morgan Dubay (Merrill, Mich. / Merrill) and give the Scots a 9-2 lead.
- Albion scored three runs in the sixth inning, two of which were unearned, to cut Alma's lead to 9-5.
- Chapman hit her second home run of the year, a grand slam, in the bottom of the sixth to end the game by the eight-run mercy rule, 13-5.
Game 2 - Alma 16, at Albion 2 (5 innings)
- Alma scored in every inning except the fifth. It's five runs in the first inning started with a leadoff home run to left-center field by Tucker. Creed singled home Schweiger and Brooks followed with a double. Two batters later, Madyson Piche (Sault Saint Marie, Mich. / Sault Area) doubled home both Creed and Brooks. Terwilliger then singled home Piche from second.
- The Scots scored four more runs in the second on a series of singles - Brooks brought home Tucker, Piche plated Creed, Terwilliger scored Brooks, and McClure singled home Piche to go up 9-0.
- The Scots tacked on three more runs in the third: Brooks singled home Schweiger, Piche doubled home Creed and Brooks scored on a fielder's choice from Terwilliger.
- Schweiger singled home Hannah Cambe (Demotte, Ind. / Kankakee Valley) in the fourth. A bases-loaded walk to Brooks plated Tucker and Terwilliger followed with a two-out two-RBI single. That put Alma up 16-0.
- Albion picked up two runs in the bottom of the fifth to try to extend the game, but it wasn't enough.
Notables
- Mary Brooks has nine home runs this year, tied for the third most in a single season in program history, and 17 in her career, which is also third on the all-time list. Her nine bombs this year ties her with Danielle Service, who graduated in 2017.
- Brooks had nine total bases in the series, good for a 1.286 slugging percentage.
- Bry Chapman slugged 1.333 on the day, which led the team. She went 4-for-6 with a home run and a double.
- Seven Scots hit .500 or better on Friday and five slugged over 1.000.
- Chapman has two home runs in her last five games. She went 3-for-3 with five RBI in game one.
- Brooks allowed two runs on six hits and one walk and struck out two batters in five innings of work in game two. Brooks also had an opponent batting average of .280 in six total innings of work on the day.
- Riley Terwilliger went 6-for-7 on the day and tied for the team lead with six RBI with Brooks.
- Alma's leadoff batters went 4-for-6 in game one.
- Albion's coaching staff, Head Coach Leigh Ann LaFave and Assistant Coach Amanda Schneider, are both Alma alums. In addition, Amanda's father Alan is an assistant coach for the Scots.
What's Next
This game concludes the regular season for the Scots. As of Friday (April 27) evening, Alma is 9-7 and in fifth place in the conference. Third-place Hope, fourth-place Adrian and sixth-place Trine are all within two games of the Scots. Hope plays Adrian on Saturday (April 28) and Calvin plays Trine. The final standings will be determined following those games.
