How It Happened

Game 1 - Trine 10, at Alma 0 (5 innings)

  • Daugherty hit an RBI double to begin the scoring in the fourth, followed by a single by Kaylee Fox, a fielder's choice by Ryan and a walk to Kennedy Baugh.
Game 2 - at Alma 11, Trine 9 (8 innings)
  • Alma's first run came when Chelsea Schweiger (St. Clair, Mich. / St. Clair) scored on a throwing error by the Trine pitcher.
  • Trine scored six runs in the fourth inning, starting with a solo shot by Kaylee Fox. It added five more runs after a fielding error by McKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich. / Edwardsburg), culminating in a two-run single by Daugherty. All five of the runs following the error were unearned.
  • Creed got two runs back in the top of the fifth with a deep home run to left field, her second of the season, scoring Cassidy Tucker (Coleman, Mich. / Coleman).
  • Down 7-4 in the top of the seventh, Alma had its best inning of the day. Trine pulled starting pitcher Hannah Kampmann for Kate Saupe, who pitched all of game one, after a single by Tucker. Saupe would go on to allow the four tying runs, followed by three more runs in the eighth inning.
  • Creed plated Tucker on a sacrifice fly after Schweiger singled her to third. Later, with the bases loaded, Riley Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich. / Sacred Heart Academy) reached on an infield single to score Schweiger and Madyson Piche (Sault Saint Marie, Mich. / Sault Area) singled to center field to score Erin Lee (Commerce, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern). Katie McClure (Manchester, Mich. / Manchester) sacrificed Kaylee Martin (North Branch, Mich. / North Branch) home for Alma's seventh and game-tying run.
  • With the game-winning run on second base, Schweiger made a diving catch on a line drive that forced her to come in. She dove to her right and made the game-saving catch with the ball tailing away from her to send the game to extra innings.
  • In the top of the eighth with the score tied at seven, Creed hit a two-run double to score Tucker and Schweiger. Brooks followed that up with a shot to center field, her sixth of the season, to give the Scots an 11-7 lead. Saupe was then replaced by a returning Kampmann.
  • Trine picked up two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a pair of singles. After the game was postponed with runners on first and second with one out, Brooks got the final two outs by way of a popup and strikeout.
