Box Score 2 Clermont, Fla. - The Alma College softball team split a pair of games on Sunday (Feb. 25), defeating Saint Mary's College (Minn.) 8-7 in eight innings before falling 8-5 to Concordia College.
Mary Brooks (Portland, Mich. / Portland) led the offensive attack, going 4-for-8 with two doubles, a home run and four RBI. Riley Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich. / Sacred Heart Academy) also performed well, going 3-of-7 with a double and a triple.
In addition to her action at the plate, Brooks threw eight innings on the mound, going for two and a third innings in game one and five and two thirds in game two. She allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out five batters.
Against the Cardinals, Hannah Cambe (Demotte, Ind. / Kankakee Valley) scored the eventual game-winning run in the eighth inning after Alma gave up leads of three and four runs.
How It Happened
- Brooks homered to lead off the second inning of game one. Later in the inning, Bry Chapman (Holt, Mich. / Holt) reached first on an error by Saint Mary's left fielder, scoring Preslee Deater (Grant, Mich. / Grant) and Terwilliger to give Alma a 3-0 lead.
- After the Cardinals tied the game in the third inning, Chapman doubled to right-center field, scoring Kendall Bird (Holt, Mich. / Holt) from first. Then, with the bases loaded, Brooks cleared them with a double off the right field fence to give the Scots a 7-3 lead.
- A four run sixth inning by Saint Mary's tied the game once again.
- The international tiebreaker rule placed a runner on second base to begin the eighth inning. Alma twice sacrificed Hannah Cambe over, first by Kaylee Martin (North Branch, Mich. / North Branch) and then by Chapman that led to the 8-7 win.
- The Scots struggled in the first inning of game two after taking over two hours to secure the game one win. Concordia scored seven runs on two hits and one error before three outs were made.
- In the bottom of the first, Alma scored three runs with two outs, starting with a double by Terwilliger to score Cassidy Tucker (Coleman, Mich. / Coleman) and a single by Madyson Piche (Sault Saint Marie, Mich. / Sault Area) to plate both Terwilliger and Chelsea Schweiger (St. Clair, Mich. / St. Clair).
- The Cobbers added a run in the fifth inning on a solo shot by Nicole Johannes.
- Down five in the bottom of the seventh, Terwilliger tripled to bring home Morgan Dubay (Merrill, Mich. / Merrill), then scored on a single by Piche to make the score 8-5.
