Men's Soccer Defeats Albion Behind Canlas's Game-Winner

Box Score

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College men's soccer team defeated Albion 2-1 in the waning minutes of double overtime on Saturday (Oct. 6). Noah Canlas (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville Central) scored the game-winner in the 108th minute after the two teams were tied at one for over 70 minutes of game time. Sam Swem (Buchanan, Mich. / Buchanan) posted his first career goal in the game, as well.

Alma is now 5-5 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA. The Britons fall to 5-4-2 and 0-2 in the conference.

How it Happened

  • Albion's Will Coburn began the scoring in the 27th minute. Alex Spratte had the ball on the end line by the near post, attracting Alma keeper Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven). Spratte sent a pass to the far side of the box where Coburn put it away for the game's first goal.
  • In the 35th minute, Lucas Foust (Brooklyn, Mich. / Jackson Lumen Christi) had the ball just inside Alma's offensive third of the field. He twisted the ball between a number of defenders and found Swem inside the box, who shot past Maximillian Loria for the game-tying goal.
  • The score remained tied for the entire second half. In fact, neither team registered a shot on goal in the second half.
  • Canlas' goal came at the 107:48 mark of double overtime. Alma hit the counter-attack after an Albion corner kick was squandered. Danten McFate (Haslett, Mich. / Haslett) received a pass at midfield and sent a long ball to Canlas who ended up with a breakaway chance. He put it away nearly two minutes shy of Alma's first tie of the season. It was Alma's only shot in either overtime period.

Notables

  • Canlas is second on the team with four goals this season. His career high in goals is five, which was during his freshman year. Today's goal was also his second game-winner of the season and seventh of his career.
  • Senior defender Lucas Foust (Brooklyn, Mich. / Jackson Lumen Christi) is now tied for the team lead in assists (three) with midfielder Tanner Parrett (Muskegon, Mich. / Mona Shores). He had zero assists in his first four collegiate years.
