Softball Wins First Two Home Games of 2017 Against Olivet

Box Score 1

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College softball team swept Olivet College on Saturday for its third and fourth conference wins of the season. Alma improves its record to 14-4 overall and 4-0 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association while Olivet falls to 9-15 and 0-4.

Morgan Stratton (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) won game one by striking out eight batters and allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits. Olivet's batting average against her was .179. Stratton owns the second best ERA in the MIAA of 1.15. Katie McClure (Manchester, Mich./Manchester) picked up the win in game two after allowing one run on six hits and seven strikeouts. She is seventh in the MIAA in ERA at 1.86.

Left fielder Chelsea Schweiger (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) led the team with six hits, three runs scored, six total bases, two stolen bases and a slugging percentage of .667. She is currently the conference leader in stolen bases with nine.

Down 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth in game one, Anna Couture (Posen, Mich./Posen) executed a sacrifice bunt that scored Cassidy Tucker (Coleman, Mich./Coleman) from third to tie the game. Two batters later, McClure reached first on an error by the third baseman, allowing Couture and Kelsey Spencer (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids) to score, giving Alma it's first lead of the game - one it would hold over the next half inning. Olivet scored one run in the top of the seventh, but Stratton got Kara Gjeltema to ground out to Couture to end the game.

Game two saw the Scots take the lead in the second inning and never look back. With the bases loaded, Spencer reached first on an error by the third baseman, which scored Danielle Service (Mason, Mich./Mason) from third. Alma scored another run that inning when Riley Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Sacred Heart Academy) came around to score on a Schweiger single to the third baseman.

McClure smacked her fourth triple of the season in the fourth inning, scoring Spencer and Averi Munro (Morrice, Mich./Morrice) and tying her for the second-most triples in the conference. Mary Brooks (Portland, Mich./Portland) picked up an RBI on a single through the right side in the top of the sixth, scoring Schweiger. Brooks and Service are two of the MIAA's top hitters. Brooks is first in batting average (.519) and on base percentage (.561) and third in slugging percentage (.731), while Service is third in batting average (.455) and on base percentage (.500) and first in slugging (.800).

Alma returns to Scots' Park on Sunday to play Kalamazoo in a double that has been rescheduled twice. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
