Box Score 1 Delaware, Ohio - The Alma College softball team swept Ohio Wesleyan University 10-4 and 5-4 on Saturday afternoon in the team's first two games since returning home from its Florida Spring trip on March 3. Danielle Service (Mason, Mich./Mason) hit two home runs in the game one win while Mary Brooks (Portland, Mich./Portland) homered and singled home the game-winning run to take game two.
Game one saw the Scots (9-3) fall behind 4-0 after two innings. In the top of the third, Service hit her first of two home runs, a shot to left field scoring McKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) and Katie McClure (Manchester, Mich./Manchester) and cutting the Ohio Wesleyan (4-10) lead to one.
Alma took the lead for good in the fourth inning when it scored four runs. It began with a walk to Erin Lee (Commerce, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) who scored on a sacrifice bunt by Chelsea Schweiger (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair). Later, with the bases loaded, Service worked one of Alma's eight walks on the day, scoring McClure from third. Next, Riley Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Sacred Heart Academy) singled to center field, bringing home both Katie Long (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic) and Brooks.
In the fifth inning, Brooks hit her second double of the season, scoring McClure and Schweiger. Service's second home run came in the sixth, a solo shot to lead off the inning. After both games, Service is tied for the team lead in home runs with two along with four other Scots. She is also the second Alma player to hit two home runs in a single game this year, joining Lee who did so against Wartburg.
Morgan Stratton (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) pitched all seven innings and allowed four hits and four runs (all unearned) with six strikeouts and two walks. She is currently second in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in ERA at 0.90 and fourth in strikeouts over seven innings at 7.36.
Stratton also picked up the win in game two after coming in to pitch the final 1.2 innings. McClure started the game and allowed four runs (three earned) and struck out six in 5.1 innings.
With the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh and Anna Couture (Posen, Mich./Posen) on third base, Brooks singled up the middle, scoring Couture and giving Alma its ninth win of the year. Brooks had four RBI in game two and six on the day to tie her for the team lead with Service who had five on Saturday and Terwilliger who has two. With three extra-base hits, she also took over the team lead in batting average at .485 and slugging percentage at .758.
Both teams scored two runs in the first inning. Brooks smacked her second home run of the season, scoring Schweiger for the seventh time this season. Alma broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth when Lee singled home Terwilliger from third base. It added another run in the fifth when Brooks doubled to center field, bringing home Long.
The team is scheduled to play on Sunday, March 26 at 2 and 4 p.m. at Aquinas.
