No. 10 Softball Cruises to Two Big Wins on Day Two of Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Clermont, Fla. - TheNo. 10 nationally ranked Alma College women's softball team bounced back from a two-loss opening day with two victories on day two of the regular season. The Scots won game one against Wartburg 12-4 and game two against Capital 11-0 in five innings on Monday (Feb. 27). The team's 23 combined runs in today's games are the most Alma has scored in consecutive games since March 4 of last season when it scored 25 -- 17 against Mt. Vernon Nazarene and eight against Northwestern.

Alma (2-2) hit .500 on the day and smacked five home runs, two from McKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg), two from Erin Lee (Commerce, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) and one from Cassidy Tucker (Coleman, Mich./Coleman). Creed has tied her season total in home runs from last season, while Lee hit the first two bombs of her career. As a team, the Scots had a .561 on-base percentage and slugged .845 on the day. They also took eight walks and struck out just twice in two games.

Against Wartburg (2-1), the Scots fell behind 1-2 after one inning, but took control after a four run second. Creed doubled to left center to lead off the inning and scored on a throwing error by the catcher after she was moved to third by Danielle Service (Mason, Mich./Mason). Riley Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Sacred Heart Academy) then brought Service home with a single to center field. Up next was Tucker who singled back to the pitcher. Both she and Terwilliger scored after an Anna Couture (Posen, Mich./Posen) single and an error by the Wartburg second baseman. The Knights committed four errors on the day.

After going 0-for-1 with a sacrifice in her first two at-bats, Lee lead off the top of the sixth inning with a solo shot to left field. She followed that up in the top of the seventh with another bomb to left field, scoring Tucker from third. Tucker scored three runs on the day and drove in two, herself.

Katie McClure (Manchester, Mich./Manchester) pitched all seven innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits, one walk and seven strikeouts. She also drove in Alma's first run of the day in the top of the first: a single up the middle to score Couture from second.

Morgan Stratton (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) pitched a five-inning complete game shutout in game two against Capital (1-1) and got plenty of run support from the offense. The Scots scored ten runs in the second inning and nearly batted around twice. The highlight of the inning was Creed's grand slam to right center field.

Alma's ten runs came on nine hits, eight of them singles, and added three walks. Tucker, Lee and Chelsea Schweiger (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) all hit two singles in the inning. Lee scored twice in the inning, once on a single from McClure and one on a Couture single.

Stratton allowed three hits and struck out seven batters over five innings. She has 14 strikeouts in two appearances this year.

Alma is back in action on Tuesday morning. The Scots will play Cabrini in a doubleheader starting at 9 a.m. Alma beat Cabrini 4-0 in Florida last season. McClure earned the win after pitching a complete game three-hit shutout.
