Box Score Alma, Mich. - The Alma College men's soccer team lost its second consecutive game for the first time this season on Tuesday afternoon. The Scots fell 2-0 to No. 15 Calvin College in a rematch of last season's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship.
Alma's (6-3-1, 2-2-1 MIAA) defense, which had the best goals-against average in the conference entering the game (0.43), had trouble with Calvin's speed and passing. Jacob Witte got the Knights on the board in the fourth minute. He fired a close-range shot which Nick Strait (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) saved, but the rebound went right back to Witte who shot to the far post and scored his third goal of the season. Strait would go on to make eight saves in the contest.
Calvin (8-1, 5-0 MIAA) picked up another goal in the 56th minute. Isky Van Doorne sent a cross on the ground to Trent Vegter who shot to Strait's left and scored his third goal of the year. The Scots were outshot 18 to seven overall and 10 to three in shots on goal.
Strait remains the conference leader in saves (65) and save percentage (.915), while both he and the Scots fall to second in goals against (6) and goals-against average (0.66 for Strait, 0.59 for the team).
Alma's next match is on Saturday, October 1. The Scots will host Trine University at 2:30 p.m.
