Box Score 1 Alma, Mich. - Today (April 24) was senior, parents and alumni day at Scors Park for the Alma College softball team. The team honored their three seniors that graduated yesterday (April 23) from Alma College before facing off against Olivet College in a doubleheader.
Alma will lose three starters, Sarah Collier (Fenton, Mich./Fenton) who plays first base, Kassidi Adams (Montrose, Mich./Montrose) who covers shortstop and Kayla Merice (Dorr, Mich./Wayland) who splits time between catching and the designated player position.
Alma won both games of the doubleheader, bringing down the Comets 7-0 in the first game before defeating them 9-1 in game two. The 12th-ranked Scots improved to 26-6 on the season and sit atop the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) along with Trine University at 11-1. Olivet fell to 16-14 on the season and 3-9 in league play.
Game One: Alma 7, Olivet 0
Alma scored at least one run in four of the six innings they batted in, including three runs in the bottom of the third. The Scots brought down the first three batters in the top of the first and took off from there scoring two in the bottom half of the frame on RBIs from sophomore Mary Brooks (Portland, Mich./Portland) and Collier.
Brooks kept it going in the bottom of the second inning notching her second RBI double of the day to score junior Anna Couture (Posen, Mich./Posen) giving the Scots the 3-0 advantage.
On four hits in the bottom half of the third frame Alma crossed the plate three times. Collier, sophomore Erin Lee (Commerce, Mich./Commerce), Adams and Couture all recorded singles to eventually move Alma's lead to 6-0 through three innings.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning freshman Chelsea Schweiger (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) reached first on an error, stole second then scored on an RBI bunt from Couture. Alma finished the game with a final score of 7-0.
Couture was 3-for-3 in the game with two RBIs, Brooks was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Collier was 3-for-4 with an RBI of her own and Adams tallied the last RBI for the Scots. Junior Morgan Stratton (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) got the win from the circle (14-4) pitching a complete game with two strikeouts.
Game Two: Alma 9, Olivet 1
Similar to game one Alma notched runs in six separate innings to walk away with the 9-1 victory over the Comets.
Sophomore Katie McClure (Manchester, Mich./Manchester) earned the win, improving her record to 12-2 this season allowing only two hits and striking out seven Comet batters. Eight different Scots tallied a hit and six players had at least one RBI. Freshman McKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) had the team high of three RBIs.
In two hits in the top of the first inning Alma jumped out to the early 2-0 lead but Olivet answered in the bottom half of the frame capitalizing off of an Alma error to bring the score to 2-1.
Alma did not allow Olivet to score again the remainder of the game and pushed their lead to 6-0 adding two runs in both the third and fourth inning. McClure retired four batters between the third and fourth inning on top of it.
The Scots added one run in both the fifth, sixth and seventh inning on six total hits in those three innings. Couture, Collier and Lee were the three Scots who had the RBIs to allow their teammate to cross the plate. With a fly out and two strikeouts from McClure in the bottom half of the seventh inning Alma earned the 9-1 victory over the Comets.
Alma's regular season is winding down. The Scots will host Trine University on Wednesday, April 27, for their last home game of the season in a matchup between MIAA leaders. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3:30 p.m. Alma will then play its last regular season game on the road at Kalamazoo College on Saturday, April 30. The doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m.
