Box Score Holland, Mich. - The Alma College Softball team had a scheduled double header against Hope College this afternoon (Mar. 30) but due to inclement weather in the Holland, Mich. area the two teams were only allowed to get in one of the two games. Alma won the first game 8-1 and holds the 4-2 lead through four innings in the postponed second game.
With one game left to play in the double header Alma is holding a record of 16-5 and are so far 3-0 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). Hope is now 9-6 on the year and 0-1 in the league.
Alma took the lead in the top of the second inning, scoring four runs and never looking back after that. As the lead off batter, senior Sarah Collier (Fenton, Mich./Fenton) singled to left field. Junior Danielle Service (Mason, Mich./Mason) moved the runner to second on a sacrfice bunt. Senior Kassidi Adams (Montrose, Mich./Montrose) hit an RBI double down the left line. With two outs, freshman Chelsea Schweiger (St.Clair, Mich./St.Clair) also had an RBI double down the left line. Junior Anna Couture (Posen, Mich./Posen) finished the inning off with a two run home run to give Alma the 4-0 lead.
Neither team scored again until the top of the sixth inning when Alma crossed the plate for a fifth time. Alma had two hits in the top of the sixth and it was sophomore Mary Brooks (Portland, Mich./Portland) single that scored the runner to make the game 5-0.
Hope scored their only run in the bottom of the sixth inning to bring the score to 5-1. Alma had two outs on the board but an error scored the Dutch runner.
Alma increased their lead in the top of the seventh with three more runs. The Scots capitalized on two Hope errors and notched four hits in the inning to push their lead to 8-1. Hope had one last attempt in the bottom of the seventh but the Scots brought down the first three Dutch batters.
Junior Morgan Stratton (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) was in the circle for Alma and after the win her record improved to 10-3 on the season. Stratton pitched a complete game while she allowed only four hits, did not walk a single batter and struck out nine. The one run the Dutch scored was an unearned run.
Alma hit well today with 35 at bat they recorded 14 hits. Collier went 3-3 while Adams and Schweiger both went 3-4, Schweiger co-led the team with three RBI's. Couture also had three RBI's in the victory today and her home run was her second of her career.
Alma is scheduled to play the postponed game tomorrow (Mar. 31) again at Hope College. The game is set to pick back up in the top of the fifth beginning with Hope's lead off batter, Autumn Anderson. Alma is currently leading Hope 4-2.
