Box Score 2 Clermont, Fla. - After two tough losses yesterday the Alma College softball team turned around today to face off against Capital University and Franklin College on the National Training Center Field in beautiful Clermont.
The Scots earned two wins on the day, defeating Capital 3-0, before bringing down Franklin 7-1. At the conclusion of today's contests, Alma heads in to Tuesday with a 2-2 record.
Game One
In vengeance from yesterday's losses the Scots did not allow one run in their first game against Capital bringing them down 3-0.
Each team was scoreless through the first two innings and after two hits and allowing one runner on base in the top of the third the Scots held Capital off to head in to the bottom of the third 0-0.
The bottom of the third was when the magic happened for the Scots. With one out on the board junior Anna Couture (Posen, Mich./Posen) hit a single, junior Kayla Holz (Bad Axe, Mich./Bad Axe) followed up with a single down the middle to put runners on first and second. Sophomore Mary Brooks (Portland, Mich./Portland) was up next and she knocked a home run to give Alma their three runs as she earned the three RBI's of the game. Two more consecutive outs concluded the third inning.
Capital was unable to generate any offense in the next four innings and Alma earned their first win of the 2016 season.
Junior Morgan Stratton (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) was in the circle for the Scots, picking up her first win (1-1). She pitched all seven innings and allowed no runs, gave up only three hits and concluded with six strike outs.
Game Two
Alma came out swinging in the second game of the day against Franklin College defeating them 7-1 in the seven inning game.
Alma served as the away team in the second game. In the first three innings Alma put a lot of runners on base but defense by Franklin kept four runners trapped on base to keep the score knotted 0-0 through the top of the third.
Franklin took the lead and scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the third on an Alma error but Alma answered in the top of the fourth with three runs. In the top of the fourth inning alone the Scots notched those three runs on four hits, one sacrifice bunt and they left one runner on base.
Alma did not stop there as they scored one run in both the fifth and sixth inning and notched two more runs in the top of the seventh to cap off the 7-1 victory for Alma.
As the designated player junior Jade Garcia (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) led the Scot's batters going 3-3. Freshman Macy Charboneau (Cheboygan, Mich./Cheboygan) also had a game of strong at bats going 2-3 and picking up team high two RBI's.
Sophomore Katie McClure (Manchester, Mich./Manchester) was in the circle in the second game pitching all seven innings, allowing only one run and picking up four strikeouts.
The Scots will stick with their double header trend taking on the University of Mount Union tomorrow (Mar. 1) at 1:00 p.m. followed by a night game against Cabrini at 5:00 p.m.
QUOTE
Head Coach Denny Griffin
on the day...
"It was great to see what day two brought after a day of learning. The team was a little more focused with lots of energy. We had great pitching by all our four pitchers in the JV and two varsity games with some timely hitting. I believe today showed what this team can do."
