Scots Take Down Hope 2-0, Remain in Second Place in MIAA

Box Score

Holland, Mich. - The Alma College men's soccer team defeated Hope College 2-0 on Saturday evening behind Austin Gabris' (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) third goal of the year and an own goal by the Flying Dutchmen. It is Alma's second victory over Hope this season, the first being a 1-0 victory on September 17.

Alma got on the board first by way of an own goal in the 41st minute. A Hope defender passed the ball back to his keeper Blair McCormick who was coming out of the net. The ball slipped past McCormick and snuck just past the goal line as he tried to save it.

Gabris' goal came in the 63rd minute. It was a strike from roughly 15 yards out after forcing a turnover from Hope as it was trying to get out of its own defensive third. Gabris picked up the ball at the top of the box and with just enough space to shoot, he shot to McCormick's left just between he and the goal post.

Freshman keeper Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) made four saves and registered his third shutout of the year in as many starts. The Scots remain second in the conference with a 0.57 goals against average.

Alma returns to action on Tuesday, October 11 when they travel to Kalamazoo to take on the Hornets at 7 p.m. Alma and Kalamazoo played to a scoreless tie earlier this season.
