Box Score Angola, Ind. - Kyle Kansman's (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) header off a corner kick in double overtime gave the Alma College men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Trine University on Tuesday afternoon and a berth in the MIAA Postseason.
"This third straight trip to the MIAA playoffs is just a great symbol of the strength of our program over a period of time," said Head Coach Josh Oakley. "I'm pleased for the veterans who've committed so much of themselves to this team. I'm also happy for our many young players who've come into our team and made an impact already."
Three of the team's veterans put their stamp on this game to guide Alma back to the playoffs. Kansman, a senior, scored his third goal of the season in the 104th minute off a corner kick from 2017 classmate Josh Carolan (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe).
Another senior, keeper Nick Strait (Jenison, Mich./Jenison), tallied nine saves and recorded his eighth shutout of the season. Strait now leads the conference in save percentage (.879) and is second in saves (87), goals against (12) goals-against average (0.84) and shutouts. Alma (12-5-1, 8-4-1 MIAA) outshot Trine 21-15 in the match.
"Last year when 12 seniors moved on from our team there were many people saying that we would take a dip," said Oakley. "That has been part of a great many motivational talks we've had as a group in preparation for this season."
Alma's next two matches are against Adrian, beginning with the final game of the regular season on Saturday, October 29 at 2:30 p.m. when Alma hosts its Senior Day. That outcome will determine where the two teams will play its opening round postseason match. Alma defeated Adrian 1-0 earlier this year.
"We've had to fight tooth and nail to be where we are at the moment and we know so much still lies ahead. Adrian College has a great team and they've proved that all season long. We are excited to play them not once more but twice more."
