Falardeau Scores Game-Winning Goal in 2OT

Box Score

Alma, Mich. - Sam Falardeau's (Mason, Mich./Mason) first goal of the season was the game-winner for the Alma College men's soccer team against Olivet on Saturday evening, as the Scots (10-4-1, 6-3-1 MIAA) took the contest 1-0 in double overtime.

"After a punch in the gut earlier this week, our guys were able to get a win against a tough Olivet team," said Head Coach Josh Oakley. "They have the best left sided player in the MIAA and are a gritty team."

Falardeau's goal came after a corner kick by Noah Canlas (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) in the 104th minute. The ball was headed about multiple times, including a header by Austin Gabris (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) that was saved. Eventually, the ball found its way to Falardeau who headed it past Olivet's keeper Nathan Weeks.

Saturday's win is Alma's second over the Comets this season, the earlier being a 2-1 win on the road which saw Canlas score both goals.

"They've played us extremely hard both times this year, and to be honest, deserved something more than they got," said Oakley. "It was a case where we just pounced on a chance and came out victorious."

With four games remaining in the regular season, there are four teams competing for the final three spots in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association postseason. As of Saturday evening, Alma, Adrian, Albion and Kalamazoo are all within four points of each other with Calvin sitting comfortably in first place with 27 points.

"We've been working hard on focusing on the process of preparing for only the next game and we will continue to do that."

Three of the last four games the Scots will play are against teams in the top half of the conference. Alma will host Albion on Wednesday, October 19 at 4 p.m. The Scots were defeated by the Britons 2-0 earlier this season.
