Box Score PELLE, Iowa - Even under extreme heat conditions, the Alma College men's soccer team prevailed and defeated Central College 3-2 on their home field (Sept. 4) at the Central College soccer field. The Scots now have an unblemished record of 2-0 on the season while Central falls to 0-2 on the year.
The Scots start out early when they score in the 44th minute due to an own goal. After the 1-0 lead the Scots answered two more times in the first half. So. Jon Buitenhuis (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) scored his second goal of the season in just two games. He received an assist from Sr. Julian Birge (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) in the 24th minute.
Only four minutes later and the Scots increased their lead even farther giving them the 3-0 advantage in the 20th minute of the first half. Sr. Zach Vandeveer (Elk Rapids, Mich./Elk Rapids) scored with another assist from Birge. Birge recorded his highest assist game of his career with two in the first half.
The Scots finished the first half with the 3-0 lead. Central College was able to slide through the Scots defense twice cutting the lead 3-2 in the second half. Yet, overall the Scots defense prevailed and the Scots notched another win on their belt as they finished the game 3-2.
Jr. Nick Strait (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) earned another win (2-0) in the net for the Scots. He allowed two goals and saved two on the day.
Alma remains on the road and will travel to Monmouth, Ill., to take on the Fighting Scots. Match time is slated for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 6) at Monmouth's Peacock Memorial Athletic Park.
