On a chilly Wednesday (Sept. 30) evening the Alma College men's soccer team hit the Scotland Yard for a conference battle against the Hornets of Kalamazoo College. Both teams entered the match today with hopes of extending their MIAA records to 4-1.

The first half was a well fought battle for possesion back and forth. Kalamazoo outshot the Scots 9-3 despite only one Hornet shot being on net. Kalamazoo also found themselves on top of the Scots in corner kicks 5-1.

Alma came out with a very electric beginning to the second half firing five of the first seven shots and keeping the Hornets keeper busy. A quick substitution for Kalamazoo gave them the spark they needed when Matthew Fitz buried a shot in the top right shelf of the goal just out of the reach of junior Nick Strait (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) in the 79th minute.

Down to the 89th minute of regulation and the Scots were on their last limb for a late game push.  Off a corner kick the ball eventually found its way to the head of junior Kyle Kansman (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) where he was able to guide it in for the equilizer.

Onto overtime.

The first overtime was another grind for both teams as they played stellar defense. Into the second overtime, both sides had two shots a piece when Kalamazoo was deep into the Alma zone and able to score the game winner from roughly 18 yards out. Strait (6-2) recorded only his second loss of the season in the heartbreaker. The Scots fell to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference, while Kalamazoo improved to 5-3-1 on the season and 4-1 in the MIAA.

Alma resumes conference play Saturday, October 3rd at 12:00 p.m. against the Britons of Albion College at the Scotland Yard (Alma, Mich.).
