Box Score Adrian, Mich. - The Alma College men's soccer team rallied over Adrian College, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 26) at the Docking Stadium in double overtime of play. The Scots have yet to lose on the road this year and now improve to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while Adrian drops to 4-4-1 on the season and 3-1 in conference. Both of these teams are now tied for second in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA).
Alma ousted Adrian in shots (24-15) as well as corner kicks (7-4) in today's victory. Five separate Scots had shots on goal, led by Sovis who notched three of his own. Junior Nick Strait (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) allowed one goal and recorded three saves in his victory improving his season record to 6-1.
The first half remained scoreless on both sides, then senior Julian Birge (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) scored the first goal in the 55th minute with an assist from senior Matt Sovis (Williamston, Mich./Williamston). Adrian would answer in the winding down 84th minute to bring the game to its first overtime. No goals were scored in the first 10 minutes forcing the teams to a battling second overtime where sophomore Evan Shirkey (Howell, Mich./Howell) scored his second game winner of the 2015 season.
Alma will welcome Kalamazoo College to Alma's campus at Scotland Yard on Wednesday (Sept. 30) for continued conference play, game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
