Box Score 4 Delaware, Ohio - The Alma College volleyball team traveled to Ohio Wesleyan University to take part in the Bishop Invitational (Sept.18-19) and returned with a record of 3-1 on the weekend. Alma was defeated by John Carroll University 3-1 on Friday but bounced back in the evening defeating Grove City College 3-0. Saturday was an unblemished record for the Scots as they took down Defiance College 3-0 and Manchester College 3-0.
Alma ends the weekend with an overall record of 5-7 and their conference record remains at 2-2 on the 2015 season.
Day One:
Alma vs. John Carroll (L, 3-1)
John Carroll was the first and only loss for the Scots on the weekend falling 3-1 (20-25, 15-25, 30-28 and 23-25). Senior Hannah Guilford (Hartland, Mich./Hartland) paced the way for Alma earning a double double with 19 kills and 14 digs. Guilford had the team high hitting percentage at .342. Defensive specialist, junior Molly Lark (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg) added team high 16 digs to the competition.
Alma vs. Grove City College (3-0)
The Scots swept Grove City in three sets (25-22, 25-20 and 25-9) to split 1-1 on Friday, September 18. Kills were spread across the board in the game as two players finished with nine kills, two with five and two more with four. Guilford and sophomore Dakota Pelach (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) led with nine kills a piece while Guilford also notched a career high four service aces. Pelach put up 14 assists and junior Maressa Miller (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) added 12 assists.
Day Two:
Alma vs. Defiance College (3-0)
Alma started the second day on the right track taking down Defiance College in three (25-18, 25-19 and 25-9). The Scots capitalized off of nine Defiance errors in the first game to give them the early 1-0 set advantage. The third set was promising for Alma as they had a team high hitting percentage on the year of .419. Junior Sasha Laykova (Ternopil, Ukraine/Forest Hills Northern) and Pelach led with seven kills a piece while Laykova picked up team high 11 digs. Senior Maggie Miller (Frankfort, Mich./Frankfort) put up five blocks (two solos and three assists).
Alma vs. Manchester College (3-0)
The Scots did not allow Manchester to get within striking zone bringing them down in three (25-11, 25-16 and 25-15). Maggie Miller and Guilford led with six kills a piece and Maggie Miller hit a team high of .417 while Lark and Pelach tallied eight digs a piece. Alma had a team high low on the weekend with only eight errors in the game.
At the end of the weekend Guilford was placed on the all tournament team as she finished with 46 kills, seven service aces and 37 digs.
Alma will be back in action on Friday, September 25 where they host a tri match in Art Smith Arena welcoming Calvin College and Heidelberg University. The Scots first game is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
