Furious Third Set Rally Falls Short on Senior Night

ALMA, Mich. – The Alma College volleyball program nearly pulled off a stunner, rallying from down ten points to have an opportunity for set point in the third, but the Belles of Saint Mary's (Indiana) held on just enough to beat the Scots on Senior Night, 3-0.

How It Happened:
Saint Mary's (Indiana) built up a 9-5 cushion to start the night, but Alma countered with a 9-5 run of its own to knot the score at 14. The Belles took complete control from the media timeout moving forward, accounting for 11 of the final 12 points to win set one, 15-25.

The second set saw the Scots obtain their first lead of the evening, opening the scoring with four-of-six before four unanswered by SMC, but a 6-1 stretch however put the Blue and White back in front at 8-5. The visitors from the Hoosier State kept the home squad out of arm's reach for the rest of the set, ultimately ending up with the dub, 14-25.

Both Alma and Saint Mary's were evenly matched through the first 14 points (7-7) before the Belles seemingly started to run away with things, going for six straight points and 13 out of the following 16 points for a commanding 20-10 edge. The Maroon and Teal refused to go down quietly, storming back with eight in-a-row to make it 20-18, allowing SMC to garner three consecutive points then exploding for another unanswered run of a half-dozen to setup set point for the Scots at 24-23. Unfortunately, the Belles ended the match with a sequence of block assist, kill, kill, to win in three, 24-26.

Scots' Top Performers:
Maggie McKale was responsible for just under half of the kill production for Coach Good's club, smacking 11 of the Scots' 24 kills (45.8%) for an average of 3.67 per set while also blocking two attacks.

Grace Droste topped the team at a dozen digs (4.00 p/s) in addition to a half-dozen assists (2.00 p/s) and the rare dig-kill.

Rudy Maynard put together a 5.67 assist per set ratio (17 total), Mackenzie Siko led in the blocking department with a trio (1.00 p/s), and Emily Carling was the lone player for the home side with multiple service aces (2 / 0.67 p/s).

Next:
After hanging tough with then 16th-ranked Calvin at home in non-conference play, Alma will now hit the road to Grand Rapids on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. to face the current #11 Knights in search of a much-needed upset win.
