Box Score Holland, Mich. - The Alma College men's soccer team won their opening conference match on Wednesday (Sept. 16), by a 3-1 margin to host Hope College at the Van Andel Soccer complex. The Scots overall record increased to 4-1 on the season and a 1-0 MIAA record, while the Dutch fell to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Alma jumped out to an early lead when senior Spencer Sandow (Midland, Mich./Midland) scored from the 12 yard line on an assist from senior Zach Vandeveer (Elk Rapids, Mich./Elk Rapids) in the second minute. Sandow surpassed his career high goals record as he stands at four on the 2015 season.
The Scots continued to push and increased their lead in the 15th minute after senior Matt Sovis (Williamston, Mich./Williamston) scored an unassisted goal from the 12 yard line.
For the half, Alma outshot Hope, 5-1, and took five corners compared to Hope's one pacing the 2-0 lead.
It was a hard fought second half as it went scoreless until the 67th minute when Sovis scored on an assist from Sandow. From the goal Sovis tied his career game high goals at two.
Hope would slide past the defense one time in the 71st minute but it was too late and the Scots took the match 3-1.
The Scots will be back in action on Saturday (Sept.19) as they welcome Olivet College to Scotland Yard. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
