Box Score Tuesday, Sept. 1 marked the season-opener for the Alma College Men's soccer team as they took on host Anderson College in Anderson, Ind. An energetic Alma team got the job done with an early lead resulting in a final score of 6-1.
Alma held possession for a majority of the game as they led in shots, shots on goals and corner kicks. In the first half, So. D Jon Buitenhuis (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) scored early just 2:57 in to the game. Sr. F Zach Vandeveer (Elk Rapids, Mich./Elk Rapids) found the back of the net at 23:55. Only eight minutes later and the Scots put another one on the board when So. MF Sam Falardeau (Mason, Mich./Mason) scored at 15:33 with an assist from So. Evan Shirkey (Howell, Mich./Howell). The Scots retired the first half with the 3-0 lead.
The second half was just as promising for Alma as they scored three more goals. Sr. F Spencer Sandow (Midland, Mich./Midland) got the half rolling for the Scots as he scored two consecutive goals. His first one came at 38:55 and he knocked in his second one with 36:35 left on the game clock. Anderson slipped by the Scots defense to tack on one but the Scots answered with 00:26 left on the clock as Sr. MF Nick Camargo (Alma, Mich./Alma) put the final goal in to end the game 6-1 for a Scots victory.
"It was a first win of hopefully many this season," stated Head Coach Josh Oakley. "We did some good things today, but have to keep things in perspective. To be where we want to be at the end of the season requires attention to the smallest of details and we need to do a better job with that."
Alma finished the day with 11 corner kicks to Anderson's three. Alma also led with 31 shots compared to 11 from the Anderson side.
"Our guys are confident and experienced and realize that we will continue to grow into being the team we want to be. We will improve and build on it this weekend in Iowa."
The Scots are now 1-0 on the season and will play again on Friday, Sept. 4, at Central College in Iowa. The game is set to kick off at 5:00 p.m.
