Box Score 2 On Monday, the Alma College Softball team played a doubleheader at Calvin College in a makeup of an earlier postponement. The layoff did not harm the visitors as the Scots swept the two games by scores of 6-0 in the opener and 7-3 in the nightcap.
With the two wins, Alma is now 7-1 in the MIAA and 16-10 overall on the season, while Calvin fell to 2-4 in the league and 7-13 for the 2015 season.
Game 1: Alma 6, Calvin 0
The Scots used strong pitching, timely hitting and solid defense to win the opening game by the decisive margin of 6-0.
After a scoreless first inning, Alma plated three runs in the top of the second frame. A leadoff double by So. 2B Anna Couture (Posen/Posen) and error on a ball bunted by Sr. LF Brooke Hein (Grand Rapids/GR Northview) put runners on at the corners. Hein then stole second to give Alma two runners in scoring position with Sr. CF Marie Zill (Chelsea/Chelsea) at the plate with one out.
Zill promptly crushed a triple to left field that scored two runs, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead. Zill would cross the plate on her own when Sr. RF Devan Olah (White Lake/Lakeland) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to make it a 3-0 contest.
The game remained that way until the Scots scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh to add a few cushion runs. In the sixth, Hein reached on a bunt error that scored So. RF Jade Garcia (Kentwood/East Kentwood), who had singeld, from third. Hein moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single to right field by Zill for a 5-0 advantage.
In the seventh, Jr. DH Kayla Merice (Dorr/Wayland) led off with a double and was pinch ran for by So. Kelsey Spencer (Eaton Rapids/Eaton Rapids) who moved to third on a sac bunt by Sr. 3B Lea Lusk (Columbiaville/Lakeville). Spencer then scored to make it 6-0 when Jr. 1B Sarah Collier (Fenton/Fenton) reached on another Calvin error of a bunt.
That would round out the scoring for game one as the Scots held on for the six-run victory.
So. P Morgan Stratton (Grand Blanc/Grand Blanc) was stellar in the circle for the Scots. She threw a complete game two-hitter and notched 11 strikeouts to go with zero walks, improving to 8-3 on the season.
Game 2: Alma 7, Calvin 3
The nightcap saw the Knights, batting as the visitors, jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. A hit batter by Alma starting P Fr. Katie McClure (Manchester/Manchester) was followed by a wild pitch and then a ground out that moved the runner to third. Another wild pitch by McClure scored the first run and was followed by a walk and a double that made it a 2-0 game.
Sr. P Samantha Pierce (Clarklake/Michigan Center) came on in relief and squashed the uprising, leaving the Scots down just two. This allowed Alma to strike back quickly in their half of the second frame.
With one out Couture singled, followed by a single by Hein that moved the runner to second. Pierce followed with an RBI single up the middle that made it 2-1 and Zill added a single to load the bases. A short flyout didn't score a run, but a walk to Merice tied the ballgame at 2-2. Lusk then singled up the middle, scoring two runs and giving Alma the 4-2 advantage after two.
After the Knights put two runners on base in their half of the third but did not score, the Scots then answered with three more runs of their own to take a commanding 7-2 lead into the fourth inning.
In Alma's third, Garcia reached first on an error on a strikeout to lead off the frame. Couture singled and the runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch. After a flyout, Pierce was out on a suicide sac bunt that scored Garcia to make it 5-2 with two outs.
Zill followed with a bunt single and then stole second to again put runners at second and third. A wild pitch scored Couture and a double by Olah knocked in Zill and gave the Scots the 7-2 advantage.
In the circle, Pierce cruised right along until the top of the seventh when Calvin decided to make some noise. The Knights led off the inning with two singles and Stratton came on relief to pitch for the Scots.
An error by the Scots gave the Knights a run and then another error put two runners on second and third with no outs. However, Stratton completed her outstanding afternoon by striking out the next three batters, squelching the comeback and securing the 7-3 Alma win and sweep of the day.
Pierce improved to 2-2 on the season by going 4.1 innings and allowing five hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Stratton earned a save for striking out the final three batters of the ballgame.
For the afternoon, Zill was the hitting leader for the Scots by going five for six at the plate with three runs scored and three RBI's. In addition, Couture was three for six with three runs scored in Alma's two victories.
The Scots continue the MIAA season on Wednesday afternoon when they host Saint Mary's College at Scots Park. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
