Box Score Alma, Mich. - Senior Zach Vandeveer (Elk Rapids, Mich./Elk Rapids) scored in the 64th minute to lift the Alma College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Trine on Tuesday (Oct. 6) afternoon at Scotland Yard. The Scots (8-3 overall, 5-2 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) finished the first half of the league season in second place and have already matched their win total from a year ago.
The two teams played to a draw in the first 45 minutes, with each team recording two shots on goal, before the Scots came out firing in the second half. Alma recorded five shots in the first eight minutes of the second half before Vandeveer found the back of the net, finishing off a pass from senior Aaron Bender (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) and junior Austin Gabris (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake).
The Thunder (5-7-1 overall, 2-5 MIAA) tried to force the equalizer, firing seven shots over the final 26 minutes, but the Alma defense held on to preserve their second straight clean sheet.
Junior Nick Strait (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) stopped all three shots he faced in net to pick up his eighth win and second shutout of the season.
The Scots begin the second half of league play at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, hosting Hope at Scotland Yard. Alma defeated the Flying Dutchmen, 3-1, in their first meeting this season at Van Andel Soccer Stadium in Holland, Mich.
