Box Score Alma, Mich. - On a rainy homecoming Saturday afternoon (Oct. 3) the Alma College men's soccer team triumphed over the visiting Albion College Britons at Scotland Yard, 1-0. At the end of the day the Scots improved to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the MIAA. After the victory, the Scots are tied for second in conference play with Kalamazoo College while Calvin holds first 6-0. Albion fell to 4-6-1 on the season and 2-4 in the MIAA.
After two quick shots for Alma sophomore Evan Shirkey (Howell, Mich./Howell) found the back of the net scoring the first and only goal of the game in the ninth minute. Shirkey nabbed his third goal and third game winning goal of the 2015 season.
At the end of the day Alma doubled Albion's shots 16-8 as the Scots picked up eight shots in each half of play. Albion led in corner kicks 5-3 but the Scots defense prevailed as they did not allow a goal.
Junior Nick Strait (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) was in the net for the Scots where he tallied five saves in 90:00 minutes of play and his record improved to 7-2 on the year.
The Alma College men's soccer team will stay at home and continue conference play on Tuesday (Oct. 6) as they host Trine University at Scotland Yard in Alma, Mich.
