Box Score Albion, Mich. - A 3-1 victory for the Alma College men's soccer team over the Albion College Britons was exactly what the Scots needed to increase their overall record to 11-5-1. The Scots have put the highest number in the wins column since 2000 when the team went 11-6-2.
Alma saw their opportunity early in the fifth minute when senior Aaron Bender (Marquette, Mich./Marquette Senior High) scored his third goal of the season to give Alma the 1-0 lead. There would be no more goals scored in the half as it was a low statistical half for both teams, Alma with two shots and Albion with four.
Time was winding down in the second half but Albion's Shawn Roberts managed to slip through the Scots defense to tie the game 1-1 in the 66th minute. Alma was not ready to back down as they answered in less than a minute (67th minute) on a goal from junior Tyler Raab (Mason, Mich./Mason) with an assist from senior Spencer Sandow (Midland, Mich./Midland).
Junior Kyle Kansman (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) buried the final goal on an assist from senior Matt Sovis (Williamston, Mich./Williamston) to seal the game for the Alma Scots. Junior Nick Strait (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) was in the goal for Alma, his record improved to 11-4-1 and he recorded three saves in the win.
After today Alma still comfortably holds third place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) with a record of 8-4-1 in league play with one MIAA game left to play. The Alma College men's soccer team will stay on the road and travel to Angola, Ind. to take on Trine University this Saturday (Oct. 31) at 12:00 p.m.
