Box Score 1 Saturday afternoon saw the Alma College softball team travel to Adrian College for a league doubleheader. The Scots took game one by a score of 5-2 but lost the nightcap by a margin of 4-0.
With the split, Alma is now 10-10 overall on the season and 3-3 in the MIAA, while the Bulldogs ended the afternoon with a mark of 1-2 in the MIAA and 6-6 for the 2014 season.
Game 1
For six innings, things looked bleak for the visiting Scots. Adrian scored singled runs in each of the first two frames off of starting Alma Jr. P Cori Witham (N. Muskegon/N. Muskegon), giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage.
Alma was able to muster just five hits in the first six innings but Witham settled down after the second and kept Adrian at bay as well. This meant that the Scots entered the seventh with a two-run deficit staring them in the face.
But, have no fear. Alma was up to the task and pulled off the improbable comeback. Jr. SS Devan Olah (White Lake/Lakeland) led off the top of the inning with a homerun to make it a 2-1 ballgame. Witham then singled and stole second with no outs. The Scots followed with a strikeout but Witham moved to third on a passed ball.
After another strikeout for the Scots, Witham was still at third with two outs. But, four consecutive hits put Alma ahead and propelled them to the victory. Jr. OF Brooke Hein (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Northview) hit a single that scored the runner from third and tied it at 2-2.
Sr. OF Allie Jo Nave (Onaway/Onaway) also singled and moved Hein to second. So. PH Sarah Collier (Fenton/Fenton) then notched a single, giving the Scots a 3-2 lead and then Jr. 3B Lea Lusk (Columbiaville/Lakeville) was up next and doubled in two runs that put Alma ahead 5-2.
Witham gave up one walk in the bottom of the seventh, but Adrian could not score and the Scots held on for the three-run victory. Witham went seven innings in the circle and gave up six hits with four walks, three strikeouts and two earned runs. At the plate, Hein finished 3-3, Nave 3-4 and Olah 2-3, accounting for eight of Alma's 11 hits.
Game 2
In the nightcap, the Scots fell behind again but were not able to mount the comeback this time.
After two scoreless innings, Adrian was able to push two runs on three hits across against Scots Jr. P Samantha Pierce (Clarklake/Michigan Center) in the top of the third. The Bulldogs added two additional runs on three more hits in the upper half of the fourth frame and led by a score of 4-0.
Alma was not able to mount a serious rally over the first six innings, but did get runners as far as second base two different times. In the bottom of the seventh, the Scots loaded the bases but were not able to get any runs across the plate, allowing Adrian to walk of the field with the four-run win and a split on the afternoon.
Pierce took the loss in the circle by going seven innings, allowing nine hits with four earned runs, one walk and no strikeouts. Fr. IF Anna Couture (Posen/Posen) paced the Scots with two hits in three at bats, while Lusk and Olah each had one single.
The Scots are now off until Wednesday when they will host defending MIAA Champion Trine University. First pitch of the doubleheader at Scots Park is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
