With the wins, Alma improved to 14-14 overall and 7-7 in the MIAA, while the Hornets fell to 2-12 in the league and 9-17 for the 2014 season.
Game 1
In the opener, Kalamazoo struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning off of Alma starting Jr. P Cori Witham (North Muskegon/North Muskegon). However, the Scots answered with single runs in the top of the third and fourth innings and four more in the fifth frame.
In the four-run rally, Jr. CF Brooke Hein (Grand Rapids/G.R. Northview) led off with a single and then stole second with one out. After a walk, Jr. 3B Lea Lusk (Columbiaville/Lakeville) singled to center field for an RBI. After another walk, Sr. 1B Christina Snoblen (Alma/Alma) singled and knocked in two more runs. The final run came on a fielder's choice of the bat of Witham.
The Hornets scored one more in the bottom of the fifth before Alma put it away with three additional tallies in the top of the seventh frame. In that offensive outburst, Fr. DH Danielle Service (Mason/Mason) and Sr. LF Allie Jo Nave (Onaway/Onaway) had one and two RBI's respectively.
For the game, Nave finished two for five at the plate with three RBI's, while Snoblen had one one hit and two RBI's. Service went two for four in the victory, and in the circle, Witham went the distance and gave up four hits, one earned run and had eight walks to go with four strikeouts.
Game 2
In the nightcap, the two teams played a scoreless first inning before the Hornets would strike. In the top of the second, the first six Kzoo players reached base off of Alma Jr. P Samantha Pierce (Clarklake/Michigan Center), including five hits.
Jr. P Breu Olling (Breckenridge/Breckenridge) came on in relief and was able to get the three outs, but not before the Hornets had taken a 3-0 lead.
However, the Scots did not panic and would methodically take over the game. It started with two runs in the bottom of the third as Fr. 2B Anna Couture (Posen/Posen) led off the frame with a single.
After two outs, Sr. RF Chanler McCaskey (Morenci/Morenci) singled and would advance to second on an error, which also scored Couture. Lusk followed with an RBI single and Alma had cut the deficit to 3-2.
The bottom of the fourth inning saw the Scots score two more runs as Witham singled with two outs, and after Jr. PR Marie Zill (Chelsea/Chelsea) stole second, Couture was hit by a pitch. So. PH Sarah Collier (Fenton/Fenton) followed with a two-RBI single that gave Alma a 4-3 lead.
The Scots would then put the finishing touches on the sweep by scoring two more in the bottom of the fifth, giving Alma the 6-3 advantage. In that frame, Service and Witham each had RBI singles for the Scots.
Olling threw six innings of scoreless relief to earn the win in a stellar appearance in the circle. She allowed just two hits and had four strikeouts with one walk during her outing. Offensively, Witham finished with two hits, while McCaskey and Couture each scored two runs.
The Scots will finish up the MIAA season on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Indiana to take on Saint Mary's College. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
