Scots Softball sweeps Albion College at home on Wednesday

The Alma College softball team welcomed Albion College to Scots Park for a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Scots came out strong in game one, claiming the 8-0 victory in six innings, and came from behind to take game two 8-2.

With the wins, Alma improved to 9-9 on the year and 2-2 in the MIAA. The Britons dropped to 1-12 overall and 0-2 in conference matches with the losses.

Game 1

Sr. OF Allie Jo Nave (Onaway/Onaway) led off the bottom of the first with a walk, to give Alma its first baserunner of the afternoon. Nave would steal second and then advance to third on a passed ball. Sr. 3B Lea Lusk (Columbiaville/Lakeville) followed with a single to put two runners on with one out. The Scots would successfully complete a double steal to score Nave from third and move Lusk to second. Jr. SS Devan Olah (White Lake/Lakeland) flied out to right to score Lusk from third. After the first frame, Alma led 2-0.

Albion would leave two runners on in the second, and the score remained 2-0 heading into the home-half on the inning.

Leading off in the second, Sr. IF Chanler McCaskey (Morenci/Morenci) took a pitch deep over the left-field wall to put the Scots up 3-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Sr. 2B Kelsey Spencer (Morenci/Morenci) connected on a fastball and sent it over the wall to extend the Alma advantage to 4-0 after four innings.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Sr. 1B Christina Snoblen (Alma/Alma) smacked the Scots third homer of the afternoon, extending the lead to 5-0. Later in the fifth, Spencer dropped a single into left field to score Fr. IF Anna Couture (Posen/Posen) from third. Entering the sixth inning, Alma held a commanding 6-0 lead.

Albion only managed one hit in the top of the sixth, and the score remained 6-0. Nave led off the bottom half of the sixth with a bunt, and So. C Kayla Merice (Dorr/Wayland) followed with another bunt to give Alma two runners on with no outs. Following an intentional walk to Snoblen, Olah flied out to center field to score Nave and give the Scots the 8-0 victory in six innings.

Snoblen, Spencer, Olah and Nave each collected two hits for Alma, while Snoblen, Spencer and McCaskey all tallied homeruns. Olah and Spencer both recorded two RBI's in the victory.

On the mound, Jr. P Cori Witham (North Muskegon/North Muskegon) gave up zero runs on four hits in 6.0 innings, to improve to 4-1 on the year.

Alma finished game one with 12 hits, five stolen bases and one error.

Game 2

Neither team scored any runs in the first inning, and the score remained tied 0-0 heading into the second. The Scots put two runners on in the top of the second, but were unable to manufacture any runs.

Albion led off the bottom of the second with three hits to load the bases with just one out. A single to center field would score two, and the Britons took the 2-0 lead entering the third.

Down two, Alma mounted a comeback in the sixth inning. Spencer reached on an error and Lusk followed with a single. Snoblen would sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, putting runners on second and third with just one out. Olah would single in Spencer from third, then advance to second on the throw. Witham followed by reaching on an error by the shortstop, and Jr. PR Marie Zill (Chelsea/Chelsea) scored from third to knot the score at 2-2.

With the score locked at 2-2, Alma would explode in the seventh. Jr. OF Brooke Hein (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Northview) led off the inning with a walk and Nave followed with a RBI double. Spencer walked on four pitches and Snoblen followed with a double to score both Spencer and Nave. So. OF Rae Zink (Frankenmuth/Frankenmuth) pinch ran for Snoblen and scored on a single by Olah. So. 1B Sarah Collier (Fenton/Fenton) pinch hit for McCaskey and smacked a single to left to score Olah. Hein ended the scoring in the frame with an RBI single and the Scots took the 8-2 lead into the final half inning.

The Britons managed only one hit in the bottom of the seventh, and Alma closed out 8-2 victory in the nightcap.

Olah led all players with four hits, while adding two RBI's. Snoblen chipped in two RBI's with a double, and Nave, Witham, Collier and Hein each finished game two with one RBI.

Jr. P Samantha Pierce (Clarklake/Michigan Center) got the win in game two, giving up no runs on just three hits in 5.2 innings pitched.

Alma wrapped up game two with 11 hits, three steals and only one error.

The Scots travel to Adrian College on Saturday, April 5th, for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
