Alma Softball drops doubleheader to Olivet College at home

Box Score 1

On a beautiful spring afternoon, the Alma College Softball team welcomed Olivet College to Scots Park for a doubleheader. The Comets defeated the Scots 2-1 in game one and took the second game 2-0 on the road.

With the loses, Alma drops to 7-9 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA. Olivet improved to 13-2 on the year and 2-0 in conference.

Game 1

Following a fly out, So. C Kayla Merice (Dorr/Wayland) knocked in a single to right center to give the Scots the first base-runner of the afternoon.

Jr. 3B Lea Lusk (Columbiaville/Lakeville) followed with a single to left center to advance Merice into scoring position. Alma was unable to capitalize on the scoring opportunity in the first, and the game remained 0-0 heading into the top of the second.

Jr. SS Devan Olah (White Lake/Lakeland) led off the second with a base hit before Fr. IF Celeste Boyer (South Lyon/South Lyon East) was brought in to pinch run. Following a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, Boyer moved into scoring position with two outs on the board. Once again, the Scots were unable to capitalize and the score remained knotted at 0-0.

Alma looked to break the game open in the bottom of the fourth.  Olah collected another hit, smacking a double into left field. Sr. 2B Chanler McCaskey (Morenci/Morenci) would bring Olah home with a single to put Alma up 1-0.

Olivet tied the game up in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Scots loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, but left all three runners stranded and the score remained 1-1 heading into the final inning.

The Comets managed another run in the top of the seventh to take the 2-1 moving into the home half of the inning.

Sr. OF Allie Jo Nave (Onaway/Onaway) led off the seventh with a single and advanced to second on a ground out by Lusk. Nave would be unable to advance any further and the Scots would drop the 2-1 decision in the first game.

Olah led all players with three hits and McCaskey collected the lone RBI for Alma.

On the mound, Jr. P Cori Witham (North Muskegon/North Muskegon) surrendered five hits and gave up two runs (one earned) to fall to 3-1 on the year.

Game 2

The action in game two began in the bottom of the second, when Olivet loaded the bases with one out. The Comets managed to get only one run across the plate in the inning to take the 1-0 lead heading into the third.

Alma was unable to land any base-runners in the top half of the inning and remained down 1-0. Olivet led off the bottom of the third with a single and followed it up with a two-out double to extend the lead to 2-0.

In the top of the sixth, Fr. OF Kelsey Spencer (Eaton Rapids/Eaton Rapids) reached first on an error and Lusk followed with a single to left field to give Alma two on base with no outs.  C Sr. 1B Christina Snoblen (Alma/Alma) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to give the Scots their best scoring chance of the game.  Alma was unable capitalize in the sixth, ending the inning with two fly outs.

Down 2-0, the Scots needed a rally in the seventh if they were going claim victory on Sunday. Merice sent a double to center field to put Alma in scoring position with two outs.  The Scots would be unable to score in the inning and took the 2-0 loss in game two.

Lusk, Olah and Merice each had one hit for Alma in game two.

On the mound, Jr. P Samantha Pierce (Clarklake/Michigan Center) got the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits.

Alma returns to Scots Park on Tuesday, April 1st, welcoming Albion for a doubleheader set to start at  3:30 p.m.
