Box Score 2 The Alma College softball team split two games on Friday afternoon on the last day of their annual spring trip. The defeated Concordia (MN) 8-5 and then lost to Davenport (MI) 13-1 in five innings in the second game.
After the split of the two games, Alma Head Coach Denny Griffin brings the Scots back to Michigan with a record of 5-5.
Game 1 vs. Concordia (MN)
In the first contest of the day, Concordia jumped out on Alma Jr. starting P Cori Witham (North Muskegon/North Muskegon) as they scored four times en route to an early 4-0 advantage. Even though Alma committed an error in the frame, all four runs were earned for the Cobbers.
The Scots answered in the bottom of the second inning with three runs of their own. Witham doubled with one out and eventually scored on a wild pitch after a single by Jr. DH Samantha Pierce (Clarklake/Michigan Center).
Pierce then crossed the plate on a double by Sr. 2B Chanler McCaskey (Morenci/Morenci). That was followed by a triple to right center by Fr. SS Danielle Service (Mason/Mason) that scored McCaskey.
The Cobbers added a run in the top of the third and still led 5-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Alma would then take control of the game by scoring six times on five hits and one Concordia error to gain a 9-6 advantage.
in the big inning, Sr. 1B Christina Snoblen (Alma/Alma) and Witham each had two RBI's, while Pierce recorded an RBI after banging out a triple to left field. Concordia was not able to score any runs in the top of the seventh and the Scots walked off the field with the come from behind win.
Witham threw a complete game in the circle and gave up six hits with one walk and four strikeouts. McCaskey had three hits in the win, while Snoblen, Pierce, Witham and Service each added two hits.
Game 2 vs. Davenport
The game started innocently enough for the Scots and they trailed just 1-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning. However, the floodgates opened and Davenport exploded for 11 runs on eight hits, including a homerun. Three Alma errors in the inning continued a disturbing trend for the Scots during the Florida trip.
Three Alma pitchers battled against Davenport in that fateful third inning - Jr. starting P Hannah Hybl (Central Lake/Charlevioux), Pierce and Jr. Breu Olling (Breckenridge/Breckenridge). Of the 11 runs allowed in the frame, only three were earned because of miscues in the field.
The Scots scored one run in the top of the fourth inning when Fr. 2B Anna Couture (Posen/Posen) singled to lead off the frame and scored on a double by Witham. However, it was not nearly enough for Alma to mount a comeback in the final game of the spring trip.
Davenport added one run in the bottom of the fourth and after a scoreless top of the fifth inning for the Scots, the game ended with Alma on the wrong end of a 13-1 encounter.
