Scots Men's Soccer ties Hope 1-1 in double-overtime on Wednesday

Box Score

The Alma College Men's Soccer team traveled to Holland, MI on Wednesday to take on Hope College in a critical MIAA contest. The Scots held a 1-0 lead after the first 45 minutes but the Flying Dutchmen would score in the second half to tie the match 1-1 to force overtime. The game would eventually end in a double-overtime tie, which clinched a playoff berth for the home team.

With the tie, Alma goes to 7-7-3 overall with a 6-6-1 mark in the conference. The Scots currently sit one game back of Olivet College for the fourth and final spot in the MIAA Tournament. Hope is now tied for second in the conference after Wednesday, clinching a playoff spot with a 8-4-1 league record heading into the final game of the regular season.

The Scots were on the offensive early at Van Andel Field, recording four shots compared to zero by the Flying Dutchmen in the first 11 minutes.

Alma's constant attack would pay off at 12:54, when Jr. F Zach Vandeveer (Elk Rapids/Elk Rapids) connected with Fr. M Sam Falardeau (Mason/Mason) to put the Scots up 1-0 early.

The remainder of the half saw the teams combine for 12 shots, but neither would be able to capitalize and Alma finished the first 45 minutes up 1-0 on the road.

The second half was not as action packed as the first, with both teams struggling on the offensive side of the ball.

Hope would score the equalizer at 72:40 to tie the match 1-1 in Holland.

The defenses would lock in for the final 18 minutes and the match headed into overtime with the score at 1-1.

The first ten-minute period would only see three total shots and no goals, so the match would then go to a 10 minute sudden-death period.

Alma would record the only shot of the final overtime period, and the Scots would leave Holland with their third tie of the 2014 season.

The home team held the advantage in nearly all statistical categories - including shots (20-14), corner kicks (11-5) and saves (7-6).

In goal, Sr. GK Brett Galloway (Clinton Township/Chippewa Valley) collected sevens saves 110:00 minutes to go to 3-4-2 on the year.

Alma wraps up 2014 at home on Saturday, welcoming Adrian College for a match set to start at 2:30 p.m.
