Box Score On a very chilly Tuesday afternoon at Scotland Yard, the Alma College Men's Soccer team hosted Trine University in a MIAA matchup and the home team was able to earn a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
With the victory, Alma improved to 5-6 in the league and 6-7-2 overall, while the Thunder fell to 2-9 in the MIAA and 5-11-1 in 2014.
At the 20:45 mark of the contest, Alma went ahead 1-0 as Sr. D Trae Pitts (North Muskegon/North Muskegon) scored on a header from a corner assist from Jr. M Matt Sovis (Williamston/Williamston). It was Pitts' team-leading third goal of the season.
That would be the only scoring of the first half as Alma finished with 11 total shots (two on goal) to Trine's six total attempts (four on goal). The Scots had four corner kicks to one for the Thunder in the first frame.
Just 2:02 into the second half, the Scots made it 2-0 as Jr. F Zach Vandeveer (Elk Rapids/Elk Rapids) used his trademark samersault throw in that resulted in Jr. M/F Julian Birge (East Lansing/East Lansing) heading it into the net.
The Thunder would make it interesting however as they cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 72:08 mark of the second half on a unusual type of play. The action appeared to stop as the ball came out of the corner and the Scots froze, thinking it was out of bounds. However, the ref didn't see it that way and Trine's Dalton Mullennix knocked it in unassisted.
However, the Scots would be able to hold on from there and close out the one goal victory over the Thunder. For the game, Alma ended up with 19 total shots to the Thunder's 17. Shots on goal favored Trine seven to four while the Scots ended up with nine corner kicks to Trine's one.
Alma next plays on Saturday afternoon at Kalamazoo College. Start time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
