Scots fall to Adrian 2-1 in overtime

Box Score

Despite a solid defensive effort, the Alma College men's soccer team fell to conference-rival Adrian 2-1 in overtime at Scotland Yard on Wednesday afternoon. The loss was the first for the Scots this season and brings their overall record to 5-1 and 1-1 in MIAA contests. With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 4-2-2 with a 2-0 record in conference play.

"This was a very disappointing loss for us today," said Alma Head Coach Josh Oakley. "In all five of our previous games, we converted numerous chances into goals, today we did not."

Alma got on the board first when So. M Julian Birge (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) knocked in his second goal of the season, with a header off of a throw in by So. D Ryan Schoonover (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) at the 6:14 mark.

Adrian responded at the 25:48 mark with a goal by Nick Minshall. Both teams dug in on the defensive end and the game went into overtime. It did not take the Bulldogs long score in the overtime period as Minshall tallied his team-leading tenth goal at the 5:52 mark to seal the victory for Adrian.

Despite the loss, Alma bested the Bulldogs in total shots (17-6) and corner kicks (8-3)

In the net, Sr. GK Graham Wallace (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) recorded one save while Adrian goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulous recorded a season-high nine.

The Scots return to Scotland Yard on Saturday, September 28, to take on Olivet at 2:30 p.m.
