Softball eliminated from MIAA Tournament in a 2-1 loss to Adrian in 17 innings

Box Score

The Scots Softball team took on Adrian College in a elimination game of the 2013 MIAA Tournament in Angola, Ind. Little did people know that after watching the first pitch at Noon, they would be witnessing history a mere four hours later.

The Bulldogs defeated the Scots by a margin of 2-1 in 17 innings - the second longest softball game in NCAA Division III history. Adrian won the game with one out in the 17th to advance to the Championship against Trine University, while Alma's regular season came to an end.

The Scots now have a record of 26-11 and will have to wait until the NCAA Selection Show on Monday to see if they will get a bid to the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Adrian improved to 19-16 with the win against Alma.

Alma scored their single run in the top of the second inning as Fr. 1B Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) doubled with one out. After a ground out, Fr SS Kayla Merice (Dorr, Mich./Wayland) tripled to right field to give the Scots a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning as they grinded out a run on three hits and scored the run with two outs off of Alma Sr. P Louise Rezmer (Essexville, Mich./Bay City All-Saints.

That would prove to the last run for either team for the next 12.1 innings. Not that both teams didn't have their chances as the two squads left many runners on base in the innings to come.

Adrian left the bases loaded in the sixth and eighth innings and two each in the ninth and 16th. The Scots stranded two runners in each of the eighth, 11th and 17th innings and the bases loaded in the 10th.

The Bulldogs opened up the 17th with a fly out that was followed by a single and a double that put runners on second and third. On the next at bat, Rezmer through a wild pitch that allowed Adrian C Morgan Brandt to scamper across the plate for the winning run and a 2-1 victory.

For the game, Alma had one run on 16 hits with two errors and they stranded 20 base runners, while Adrian recorded two runs on 17 hits and commited four errors and also had 20 runners left on base.

So. 3B Lea Lusk (Columbiaville, Mich./Lakeville) finished four for seven for the Scots, while Jr. LF Allie Jo Nave (Onaway, Mich./Onaway) finished three for eight in the loss. Merice was one for seven with the run and Clark had one hit in six at bats and the RBI.
