Box Score 1 Alma College's Softball team played their first home games of the season on Sunday when they hosted Adrian College in a MIAA doubleheader at Scots Park. The Scots came away with the sweep, winning the first game 3-2 and taking the nightcap 8-1. With the wins, Alma is now 8-0 in the league and 18-6 overall, while Adrian fell to 2-2 in the MIAA and 6-12 in 2013.
In the first game, Adrian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a single, an error, a walk and a hit batter. However, Alma Sr. P Louise Rezmer (Essexville, Mich./Bay City All Saints) was able to get out of the jam, leaving the bases loaded.
Alma finally struck offensively in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring three runs to make it a 3-1 game. The Scots scored on four hits with the two biggest being doubles by Sr. SS Erin Rodes (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth) and Sr. RF Amanda Schneider (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay). Rodes had one RBI on her hit, while Schneider knocked in two.
The Bulldogs made it interesting with a run in the top of the seventh that made the final score 3-2 for Alma. Adrian scored on one hit and to Alma errors before Rezmer was able to record the final out of the game.
Rezmer pitched the complete seven innings, giving no earned runs on six hits and a walk. She also recorded 14 strikeouts in the win. Schneider finished two for four at the plate with two RBI's, while Fr. 1B Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) had two hits in three at bats for the Scots.
In the nightcap, things were a bit easier for the Scots in earning the win. Alma scored one run in the top of the first inning. So. CF Brooke Hein (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) walked with one out and eventually scored on a single by So. DH Cori Witham (N. Muskegon, Mich./N. Muskegon).
Adrian scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second to tie it at 1-1. Then Alma scored three runs in the top of the third as they took advantage of three Adrian errors to take a 4-1 lead. Those runs would prove to be all the Scots would need in game two.
The Scots scored one in the fourth, two in the fith and one in the sixth to take the commanding 8-1 lead, ultimately the game's final score. The big hit in that stretch was Schneider's solo homerun, her first of the year, that gave the home team their eighth run.
So. P Samantha Pierce (Clarklake, Mich./Michigan Center) pitched a complete game in earning the win. She gave up six hits, no earned runs and had one walk to go with one strikeout. Pierce is now 7-2 in the circle for the season.
Schneider led the Scots at the plate going two for three with two runs scored and two RBI's. So. 3B Lea Lusk (Columbiaville, Mich./Lakeville) also went two for three with one run scored and Hein added two hits in three at bats with two runs. Rodes and Fr. C Kayla Merice (Dorr, Mich./Wayland) had the other two RBI's for Alma.
Next up for the Scots is a first place showdown with Trine University on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch in Angola, Ind. is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
