Box Score 1 Friday afternoon the Scots Softball team took on host Calvin College in a makeup of a previously scheduled doubleheader. Alma won both games by scores of 10-0 and 9-1, both in five innings. With the wins, Alma is now 6-0 in the MIAA and 16-6 overall, while Calvin fell to 0-4 in the league and 8-8 in 2013.
The Scots scored two runs in the first inning of the first game and followed that up with one in the second, six in the third and a final run in the fifth. Combined with Sr. P Louise Rezmer's (Essexville, Mich./Bay City All-Saints) five shutout innings, the visitors took the game 10-0 in five innings.
Offensively, So. CF Brooke Hein (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) went two for two with an RBI, while Sr. 2B Kayla Smart (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) had two hits in four at bats with two big RBI's.
In addition, Fr. 1B Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) had two RBI's and a double and So. 3B Lea Lusk (Columbiaville, Mich./Lakeville) contributed a double a run batted in. Rezmer finished her work in the circle by allowing just one hit, with one walk and eight strikeouts, to earn the victory.
The nightcap also saw the Scots win in five innings, this time by a mark of 9-1. Alma scored one run in the bottom of the second, three in the bottom of the third and a big five-spot in the fifth. Calvin notched their only run in the top of the fourth.
Lusk was the hitting hero of game two as she went two for three with two runs scored and five RBI's, with the big blast being a grand slam homerun in the fourth to put the game away for the Scots.
Others that had a big game at the plate included Sr. RF Amanda Schneider (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) who finished two for three with two runs scored, a double, an RBI and two stolen bases.
In addition, Clark finished her strong day by going two for three with an RBI and Fr. C Kayla Merice (Dorr, Mich./Wayland) had two doubles in two at bats with an RBI in the win.
In the circle, So. P Samantha Pierce (Clarklake, Mich./Michigan Center) went 3.2 innings, allowing seven hits with one earned run, one walk and one strikeout. Rezmer pitched the final 1.1 innings and had three strikeouts with no hits allowed.
Alma will play their first home games of the season on Saturday when they host Adrian College at Scots Park. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
