Box Score 1 On a bright, sunny and finally warm spring afternoon on Saturday, the Alma College Softball team hosted Saint Mary's in a league doubleheader at Scots Park. Alma won the first game by a margin of 2-0.
Saturday was Senior Day 2013 as the Scots honored four outgoing players - Sr. P Louise Rezmer (Essexville, Mich./Bay City All-Saints), Sr. SS Erin Rodes (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth), Sr. OF Amanda Schneider (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) and Sr. 2B Kayla Smart (Jenison, Mich.).
Fittingly, the four seniors accounted for all of Alma's four hits and the pitching performance in the victory. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Scots finally got on the board. So. CF Brooke Hein (Grand Rapids, Mich./G.R. Northview) reached on an error to get the rally started.
So. 3B Lea Lusk (Columbiaville, Mich./Lakeville) then followed with a sacrifice bunt that moved Hein to second base. The next hitter was Smart who belted a ball over the left-center field fence for a homerun and a 2-0 Alma lead.
The two runs were more than enough for Rezmer, who was stellar in the circle on her senior day start. She allowed just one hit and had 11 strikeouts to go with one walk in earning the win and improving to 12-4 on the season.
Schneider finished with two hits, including a triple, while Rodes and Smart each had one hit.
The second game also started very defensively as the Scots scored single runs in the top of the third and fourth innings and took a 2-0 lead into the final inning. It was Alma's last at bat that broke the game open, as the team scored four runs on four hits and there were two SMC errors.
Jr. LF Allie Jo Nave (Onaway, Mich./Onaway) led the frame off with a double and was followed by a single by Schneider that moved Nave to third. Hein then reached on an error that scored Nave and make it a 3-0 game.
Smart then doubled scoring Hein and Schneider and the next batter, So. C Cori Witham (N. Muskegon, Mich./N. Muskegon), singled to right center that scored Smart and gave the Scots the 6-0 advantage.
Rezmer then closed out the Belles in the bottom of the seventh to earn her 14th victory, as she entered the game in the bottom of the third and pitched the final five innings. She gave up two hits and had nine strikeouts to no walks. So. P Samantha Pierce (Clarklake, Mich./Michigan Center) started in the circle and went two innings, allowing three hits.
Alma had 10 hits in game two and were led by Nave, who went three for three with a run scored and one RBI. Schneider scored two runs, while Lusk added an RBI in the victory.
The Scots conclude the 2013 regular season on Sunday afternoon when they host Ohio Wesleyan University at Scots Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
