Box Score 1

On Wednesday afternoon, the Alma College Softball team hosted Kalamazoo College in a MIAA doubleheader. Alma took both games at Scots Park by scores of 9-0 in five innings and 5-1.

In game one, the score was tied at 0-0 until the bottom of the third inning and the Scots got their bats going. In the frame, Alma batted around and scored six runs on eight hits and were helped by two Kzoo errors.

Sr. SS Erin Rodes (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth) led off the inning with a triple and was knocked home on a single by Sr. CF Amanda Schneider (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay). That opened the floodgates as four more players had runs batted in during the frame - So. 3B Lea Lusk (Columbiaville, Lakeville), Sr. 2B Kayla Smart (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) and Fr. DP Sarah Collier (Fenton, Mich./Fenton) each had one, while Fr. 1B Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) had two.

After a scoreless top of the fourth inning, Alma scored three more to take a commanding 9-1 lead. Lusk and Smart singled and Clark was hit by a pitch with two outs and then So. C Cori Witham (Montrose, Mich./Montrose) hit a ball that was misplaced by the right fielder for an error.

All three runners scored on the play, the final one on an additional error by the catcher and the Scots had the eight-run advantage. The Hornets went down in order in the top of the fifth off of Alma So. relief pitcher Breu Olling (Breckenridge, Mich./Breckenridge) and the game was complete.

Sr. P Louise Rezmer (Essexville, Mich./Bay City All-Saints) pitched four innings in picking up her 10th win of the season. She allowed just one hit and recordedsix strikeouts with one walk. Schneider, Lusk and Smart each had two hits in the win.

The nightcap began with scoreless first inning before Alma scratched a run as Witham hit a double with one out in the top of the second and Rodes followed with a two-base RBI hit. In the top of the third, Schneider led off with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by So. CF Brooke Hein (Grand Rapids, Mich./G.R. Northview). Lusk followed with a RBI double and a 2-1 lead.

The Hornets stung back with a run off of Alma So. P Samantha Pierce (Clarklake, Mich./Michigan Center) in their half of the frame to make it a 2-1 ballgame.

Alma scored three runs in the top of the fourth as Fr. C Kayla Merice (Dorr, Mich./Wayland) singled to start the frame and moved to second on a sac bunt. Jr. LF Grace Westerman (Gaylord, Mich./Saint Mary's) singled and moved to second on an error that also moved Merice to third. Schneider then walked to load the bases with two outs.

That brought up Lusk, who promptly doubled and knocked in three runs that gave the Scots a decisive 5-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the fourth. Neither team was able to score the remainder of the game and Alma finished closed out the four-run victory and sweep.

Pierce (8-2) threw a complete seven inning game and allowed the one run on six hits and had two strikeouts and a walk. Schneider finished three for three with two runs scored, while Lusk was two for four with four runs batted in.

Alma is scheduled to host Hope College on Friday afternoon at Scots Park beginning at 3:30 p.m.
