Box Score 2 On Saturday, the Scots Softball team participated in day two of the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, GA, and split a pair of games in the ultra competitive tournament. In their first game, Alma defeated #25 Washington University (MO) 6-4 to become the second seed in the Silver Bracket.
In the second game, the Scots dropped a hard-fought 5-3 decision to Kean University (NJ) and will now play Fontbonne University (MO) on Sunday morning. Alma then will play one final bracket game tomorrow before heading home to Michigan.
Against perennial power Washington U, the Scots broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the third inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Sr. 2B Kayla Smart (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) that gave the team a 3-0 lead.
The Bears responded with four runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. But, the Scots answered with two tallies in the bottom of the frame with the big hit being a two-RBI double by Sr. 1B Shelby O'Dowd (Jenison, Mich./Jenison).
The Scots added an insurance run to make the score 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth when Sr. OF Amanda Schneider (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) scored an unearned run on an illegal pitch.
Sr. P Louise Rezmer (Essexville, Mich./Bay City All-Saints) threw a complete game to earn the victory for Alma. She gave up eight hits in seven innings and had three walks to go with eight strikeouts.
In the second game versus Kean, the Scots' bats were quieted by pitcher Courtney Yard and the team found themselves down 5-0 after five innings. Alma fought back however with three tallies of their own in the top of the sixth, only to ultimately fall 5-3.
Fr. P McKenna Terrill (Marcellus, Mich./Marcellus) pitched well for the Scots in the loss.
