Box Score 1 The Alma College Softball team finally played again after several postponements due to the weather and took advantage of the opportunity.
The Scots traveled to Olivet College for the MIAA opener for both teams and won two games by scores of 10-0 and 8-0, both in five innings. Alma is now 12-6 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA, while the Comets fell to 7-9 in 2013 and 0-2 in the league.
In the first game, Alma scored a single run in each of the first, fourth and fifth innings and exploded for seven in the top of the second. The first inning saw So. 3B Lea Lusk (Columbiaville, Mich./Lakeville) knock in Sr. RF Amanda Schneider (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay), who had singled to start the game.
Alma scored seven runs on six hits in the top of the second inning to take a commanding 8-0 lead. The frame was highlighted by a two-run single by Fr. 1B Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) and a doubled by Sr. Erin Rodes (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth).
The Scots made it 9-0 in the fourth when So. C Cori Witham (N. Muskegon, Mich./N. Muskegon) doubled in Fr. PR Lyndsay Ruckle (Lake, Mich./Farwell) and added the 10th run in the fifth as Jr. PH Allie Jo Nave (Onaway, Mich./Onaway) singled to score Rodes.
Olivet was unable to score in the bottom of the fifth inning to keep the game going as the Scots notched the 10-run win. Sr. P Louise Rezmer (Essexville, Mich./Bay City All Saints) pitched a two-hit shutout to earn the victory as she recorded seven strikeouts and had no walks.
The nightcap saw the Scots, playing as the home team, jump out to a 2-0 lead when Clark hit a doubled that scored So. CF Brooke Hein (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) and Lusk who had singled and reached on an error respectively.
Alma scored four runs on six hits and two Olivet errors in the bottom of the third inning and took a 6-0 lead. The big hit of the inning came from Rodes, who doubled in Fr. C Kayla Merice (Dorr, Mich./Wayland) and Ruckle.
The Scots' final two runs of the game came in the bottom of the fifth to end the game at 8-0. Rodes doubled and then scored when Schneider reached base on an error. The next hitter, Fr. PH Sarah Collier (Fenton, Mich./Fenton) singled to score Schneider and end the game.
So. P Samantha Pierce (Clarklake, Mich./Michigan Center) threw five scoreless innings and only gave up one hit with three strikeouts and no walks.
Alma is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Calvin College on Tuesday afternoon beginning at 3:30 p.m.
