Box Score In a very physical contest, the Alma men's soccer team defeated Albion 3-0 at Scotland Yard on Saturday in MIAA action. With the win, the Scots improve to 7-2 overall and are now tied for third with Kalamazoo at 3-2 in the conference standings. The Britons drop to 5-7 on the year and 2-3 in MIAA contests with the loss.
"We did what we needed to do today to secure three points at home," said Alma Head Coach Josh Oakley. "It was nice to put a few things together but I'm confident our best soccer is still to come this year."
It did not take long for Alma to get on the board as So. F Zach Vandeveer (Elk Rapids/Elk Rapids) notched a goal off an assist by So. F Aaron Bender (Marquette/Marquette) just 1:35 into the first half.
A breakaway goal by So. M Julian Birge (East Lansing/East Lansing) at the 73:28-mark put the Scots up 2-0 late in the game. A little under ten minutes later, Fr. F Tyler Raab (Mason/Mason) would send in a goal off a So. M Matt Sovis (Williamston/Willamston) assist to give the Scots the 3-0 victory.
Despite the loss, Albion outshot the Alma (15-12) and recorded more corner kicks (7-2).
Between the pipes, Sr. GK Graham Wallace (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) tallied five saves for the Scots and Andrew Bobowski finished with four for the Britons.
Alma hits the road to take on conference-leading Calvin on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 6 p.m.
