Box Score Wednesday saw the Alma College men's soccer team travel to Olivet for an important MIAA contest and the Scots dropped a 1-0 decision to the Comets. With the loss, Alma is now 5-5 in league action and 9-5 overall, while Olivet improved to 7-3 in the MIAA and 9-6-1 in 2013.
"We did some of the things we wanted to do in this match and at times played some good soccer," said Scots Head Coach Josh Oakley. "The boys implemented most of the game plan well and created solid scoring opportunities. We just didn't take our chances. For long spells we took the game to Olivet. I'm very confident in this team and we are now looking forward to getting back out there on Saturday."
The two teams played a defensive oriented match from the outset but both had offensive opportunites in the first 45 minutes of the game. The Scots had eight total shots with two on goal in the first frame, while the Comets notched six total balls at the net, with three landing as on net. But, the game remained 0-0 at halftime.
Olivet finally got on the board at 63:42 when MF Zach Schulz scored to put Olivet up 1-0, a tally that would prove to be the game-winner. For the half, Alma had eight total shots, but none credited on goal, while Oliver notched seven shots with two on goal. For the game, the Scots held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Sr. GK Graham Wallace (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) had four saves in net for the Scots, while So. M John Ulrich (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) had three shots and had one of the team's shots on goal.
In addition, So. F Aaron Bender (Marquette/Marquette) notched the only other shot on goal for Alma and Jr. M/F Michael Smith (Saginaw/Saginaw Nouvel) had three shots. So. M/F Julian Birge (East Lansing/East Lansing) contributed four total shots for the Scots in the loss as well.
Alma plays again on Saturday afternoon when they host Kalamazoo College at Scotland Yard, with the match scheduled to begin at apporoximately 2:30 p.m., or 30 minutes after the women's game.
