Box Score On a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon, the Alma College men's soccer team defeated Adrian 2-1 thanks to two late-game goals. With the win, the Scots improve to 9-4 overall with a 5-4 mark in the MIAA. The Bulldogs drop to 5-6-4 on the year with a 3-4-2 conference mark in the loss.
"This was a victory that shows and tells everything about our team philosophy," said Alma Head Coach Josh Oakley. "We are an attacking team, and we never stop working ... I am proud of my team, as usual, and they received their just reward today for their incredible perserverance." Quite frankly," Oakley continued, "we deserved every bit of this win."
Adrian struck first when Nick Minshall found the back of the net at the 18:05 mark off an assist by Riley Jackson to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 advantage early. Alma attempted three shots in the first half but were unable to score and Adrian maintained the slim 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Both teams battled throughout the second half and the score remained 1-0 late. Alma tied the score when So. M John Ulrich (Mokena, IL/Lincoln-Way East) found the top-right corner of the net at the 84:06 mark. Just over three minutes later, So. M Julian Birge (East Lansing/East Lansing) connected on a header from a cross by So. F Zach Vandeveer (Elk Rapids/Elk Rapids) to seal the 2-1 comeback victory for the Scots.
Thanks to a 14-0 shot advantage in the second half, Alma won the shots battle 17-5. The Scots also recorded nine corner kicks to just four by Adrian.
In goal, Sr. GK Graham Wallace (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) improved his record to 7-3 with the win. The Bulldogs used two goalies in the contest but Lino Taormina got the loss after recording six saves.
Alma hits the road on Wednesday, Oct. 23, to take on Olivet at 4:00 p.m.
